Yes, another bug. I reported it on day 2 after it was released.

Now I must use another software for targets, and i1Profiler can only optimize it's own targets. Another Bug perhaps???
This is a huge promotion to argyll CMS :)

FYI, I use XRite's free ColorPort application to make and measure my targets. You can export i1P patches to CP, and export CP measurements back into i1P. It's a perfectly compatible utility that provides a lot of additional flexibility and compatibility.

I am an ArgyllCMS “enthusiast” also if I am not an expert, but at the moment my favorite working combo is Spectrolino + SpectroScan + i1Profiler. I am using (thanks to the users in this forum http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?topic=53869.0). I found the ArgyllCMS software to be more complete than i1Profiler, but for most purposes I prefer the profile that I can make with i1Profiler for their “quality” (I think this is very subjective).

I can confirm that ColorPort works without problems with i1Profiler, i1Profiler works with drag and drop, so importing readings is very easy and intuitive.

I don’t use GUIs sorry, I like very much the command line philosophy and, after I learned how to use it, I found it to be also faster than a GUI.

Although smilem's requirement is probably the extreme end of needing smaller targets, i1Publish won't even make charts at the relatively common size of 6" x 4", as used by a lot of dye subs. It also fails to offer to any possibility of making charts with smaller numbers of patches than 400. Sometimes for less critical work a small chart with fewer patches can be a useful option, eg when profiling some sublimation ink products without having to use lots of expensive consumables.

+1 and the only issue that I have is poor typing which I dealt with by creating a series of lines in Notepad for the most commonly used commands.  I don't have to retype anything other than a file name and can just paste it in and run it.

Would you mind sharing your notes with novice like me  :-[
I have used argyll only with GUI, and it doesn't provide enough quality for profiles, perhaps the GUI is the limiting factor.

The chart created by iProfiler can be saved as a TIf file.

There is no reason why you cannot resize it in PhotoShop say.

The sizes of the individual patches needs to be considered so you might even choose a size that is a multiple of your intended and then use a scample to trim or indeed be lucky enough to just it all just right by design.

If for instance you needed size x by y and iProfiler gave you 1.5x by 1.5y minimum, then quartering your generated TIF and resizing each to x/2 by y/2 exactly.  Print these off on the appropriate material and tile the 4 images ready for scanning.

Fidly but workable.      ( I used this technique with an i1Pro )

Indeed, as long as one uses 'Nearest Neighbor' resampling, and as you said start with 'oversized' patches.

Some months ago I had to profile a paper that I had it in 4" x 6" format only. What I did was to choose A5 paper and to play with i1Profiler margin settings until reaching something near to the final format. Then I exported the targets and printed to the media.

As for CD/DVD, the workaround was much more laborious. I exported the 400-patch default target and copy/paste the patch color information into a CD/DVD honeycomb 2-disc target. I'm not a Photoshop specialist so the targets have a mediocre finish. The patch scanning procedure was also difficult, because of the small diameter patches. If it's of any value to anyone:

Tried to use Colorport like somebody sugested in my another thread here:
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?topic=58095.0

But I get this error see attached image (Selected paper size too small).

HELLO X-RITE are you idiots? I can measure the same size charts in PM5 without any problems??? But you see the Colorport has this better measuring algorithm that detects badly measured patches and re-reads certain rows in patch mode.

The issue is more to do with resizing than resampling and using a little common sense and inginuity.

I made a cmyk chart set of 1620 patches in iProfiler which when saved resulted in 4 Tif Files.

Each of these I resized to be the size of a 3 by 3 grid of 54mm by 85.6mm 'lables'.

In PaintShopPro I then split these pages each into 9 files that I printed on 54mm by 85.6mm lables.

I then tessalated each set of 9 into a representation of the original Tif printed upon my media that I intended to measure and hence profile.

Each of the '9' tiles (36 in total) had 45 patches (5x9) of size 9mm by 9.5mm  which were easily measure in PM5 and iProfiler both.

The iProfiler profiles being prefered.

Well go into ColorPort 2.0\Resources\configurations\PatchTemplate

Open your device template and edit (for 1iPro 091.Eye-One.xml):

Quote
MinimumPageWidth="30.6"
         MaximumPageWidth="220.0"
         MinimumPageHeight="30.6"
         MaximumPageHeight="310"

That way you can generate the same chart size as in PM5, that is 3cm x 3cm smallest. The other parameters can be edited too. I'm into hacking this myself, but some parameters have to be set to other values to give another value.

For example page size, if you want to get same page size like in PM5 you need to, change the margin to zero in colorport, then set custom page size the same as PM5 and edit 091.Eye-One.xml margins set to:

Quote
LeftMargin="6"
         TopMargin="4.5"
         RightMargin="6.75"
         BottomMargin="4.5">

Then your page will be 290.75 x 204.5 in photoshop, you have to adjust resolution and document size too. For some reason the 091.Eye-One.xml does not allow to change resolition from 80dpi to 101.6dpi like in PM5 and i1profiler

Tried to use Colorport like somebody sugested in my another thread...

I think that was suggested in this thread too :-]

But I get this error see attached image (Selected paper size too small).

Ahh, well it helps to know what you're doing. You're trying to make a target for a DVD writing printer! Yes, well you shouldn't have to reinvent the wheel as plenty of us have done this before. Of course, you could use a remote profiling service that already has a customized target ready to go.

If you're determined to make your own target, start with an appropriate patch set. If it's an RGB printer driver and you're using i1Profiler for the final profile you could use i1P's minimal 400 patch RGB set. i1P's engine makes remarkably good profiles from smaller patch sets like this. Of course you can use a larger patch set if you're in for the extra work.

When I've made targets for DVD writers I use CP to make a rectangular target in CP for an i1Pro (not the iO) - the size isn't important but let's just say a 5x7 page size will work well for 400 patches. And then reposition the patches manually in Photoshop to fit the shape of the disc including the hole in the middle. While doing this feel free to shrink the size of the patches to fit more on each disc. Be sure to include the row numbering when repositioning to the patches so you can keep track of what patch you're on when measuring. You'll likely wind up with a 2+ page (disc) target - no big deal, and you'll need to measure the final prints manually in CP with the i1Pro - not the iO. Since you're measuring the patches one at a time, CP doesn't care if they've been repositioned on the page to fit the disc's shape.

I've been profiling disc writers since they came out about a decade ago - it works fantastically well. Good luck! Hope this helps.
