Schneider XL28mm 5.6 Super Digitar - filter size
« on: August 16, 2011, 11:05:11 pm »

I (think I) read somewhere that this lens has a front filter thread of a whopping great 112mm - is that correct? The few photos I've managed to see of this lens don't appear to show any front thread? Nothing on the Schneider website to throw light on this mirky issue...

Hi

Yes, that's correct: from the press release ---> M95 x 1 mm or
M112 x 1 mm adapter

Press Release

Best regards
Thierry

Thanks for the link Thierry.

The press release says 'with M95 x 1mm or M112 x 1mm adapter' for both the 28 and th 60, which seems a bit odd (a 60mm lens with a 112mm filter thread??). I'm not quite clear why there are two options for each lens?

It would be helpful if Schneider updated their website to provide information on these two new lenses, since they've been around for a while now.

It would also be nice to know the distance from the rear of the lens (for the 28) to the sensor, when the lens is focussed at infinity. Anyone?

The 60XL is a 67mm thread.  I took delivery of this lens a couple of weeks ago and it has proven to be a great lens.  Its almost as wide horizontally as a DSLR full frame camera with a 35mm lens which is about as wide as I like to go.

Strange that Schneider have gone for a thread pitch of 1 on the 28, when their own (B+W) 112mm UV filter only comes in a thread pitch of 1.5...

Thanks Victor - I should be getting mine any time, I think the 60xl is good compromise, as I used 110 Xl on 5x4 80% whish again is 35mm equiv on 35mm DSLR.

How are you getting on with, any color cast issues with rise and fall.

Heliopan make a 112mm UV filter with a 1mm pitch that should attach ok.

None of the photos I've seen of this lens show it having a filter thread on the front. Am I right in thinking that the thread is on an adapter that replaces the current outer part of the lens, which presumably unscrews?

If you have a photo of the lens with the filter adapter in place, I'd be grateful if you could post it.

I am coming back to the questions raised by the filter and the filter tread on the Schneider XL / 5.6.

I had to get myself the information from our technician at Alpa.

First of all, all necessary parts for mounting the filter on this lens are part of the lens kit.
There is first a thin ring which needs to be unscrewed from the lens: from there one has the possibility to mount and screw 2 different rings, with different diameters (95mm or 112mm).
The 112mm ring allows to shift without getting vignetting, but the choices of filters with this diameter is rather small.
The 95mm ring will start to show vignetting at about 80% of the IC. These are approximations, since the thickness of the used filter can be different from one to another

Here some images explaining the whole.

Thanks Thierry.

I see the pitch of the 112 adapter is in fact 1.5 - rather than 1 as in the press release - makes sense, since that's the same size as the UV filter Schneider (B+W) produces.

Sorry for delay.... The 60XL is very forgiving.  Lots of room for shifting.  Color casts, for me, are easily minimized with a quick LCC.  I am almost always shifting in the 5 to 8 mm range with extremely good results.  I have gone out as far as 15mm and any cast issues were corrected with a LCC.  This lens also fits into my arsenal (35, 60, 100, 150).  My copy happens to back focus very slightly...... easily compensated for with HPF ring.
