Adobe Color Printer Utility

Is the Adobe Color Printer Utility still needed to print unmanaged profile targets?

I'm using Datacolor's Spyder3Print and MAC OS 10.6.8 (and Adobe CS5)

I seem to remember that this was absolutely essential previously. Now I've noticed targets look the same whether printed from Spyder3print or the Adobe Color Printer Utility. A spot check of spectro measurements indicate they are very close.
