I have the NEC monitor with Spectraview.  I absolutely love the Spectraview system - it's so quick and easy, and most importantly, accurate.  If you're going to pony up for an NEC, definitely get the Spectraview!

I don't bother with custom paper profiles or printer profiles... I just use the paper manufacturer's profiles for my printer, along with their media type recommendation.  In my humble opinion, I think that diminishing returns would set in rapidly once you doing anything else besides calibrate your monitor and use manufacturer paper profiles.  Those two items will get you probably 95% of the way to a perfect match; custom paper profiles and printer profiles strike me as overkill and more academic than practical.
