Good Bye MF forum.
« on: June 05, 2011, 05:09:29 pm »

I love shooting with my Phase P30+ and Hasselblad combo but I am moving on.  Currently it isn't the right camera for my shooting style.  I will miss you and all the information that I got from this forum.  I'll come back someday when the time is right.  My kit is currently for sale in the gift shop  :'(.

Cheers,

Ken

In France we have a saying: "Le roi est mort, vive le roi!" something like: "the king is dead, long life to the king".

If you moved because you are actually convinced that this is not the right equipment in your present, then it's :)

I just hoppe it is not a forced choice.

Wich you the best.

I love the format, large viewfinder, dynamic range, creamy boken.  I also will miss having a camera system the art director can't afford.  That said I find myself shooting with my canon 1DsM3 all the time in low available light.  I have been shooting more motion and videos.  I loved and hated that camera.  I love the files when I could use it.  You have different tools for different reasons and truth is I wanted to shoot it 85% of the time but I couldn't.  In practice I used it about 10% of the time.  LL forums are top notch and the medium format has always seems to suit me best.  These days I get excited about 1 lens and simplicity.  A small camera like the Fuji x100, something small.  I spent 3 weeks in Asia wearing a 38 lb back pack full of gear.  It wasn't freeing at all.  That said there is nothing like the detail, complexity and look of medium format.  A different format is a different format, f2.0 on a 35mm can look like MF but will never be the same.

Ken,

Don't you think you drama a little bit? (the thread title is an advertising case in itself) I mean, maybe it's not because you now shoot more with Canon and go movies that suddenly you are living on the railway station forever this MF romance while her silouhette evaporates in tears.

When I first read the thread, I thought: s....t, another pro is sadly closing business, or someone had an healph issue.

Why not working with just different tools? Having a vaste palette of options in wich you'll be able to choose according to each situation?

Why not just enjoying the systems for what they are? This love-hate relation you are talking, I think we all have it. There is no perfect tools but just tools.

Now if you really experienced a breakdown with the MF romance, you should be happy: you have a theme for a tribute movie. I'm serious.

Anyway, wich you the best in all your steps.

Ps: the Fuji might be a very cool camera, but it does not have sensor cleaning and beleive me, dust can enter. Specially the smokers will understand me. Nothing more frustrating than having spots on the sensor, always there, at the same place wich only solution is sending the camera to factory. For stills no issue but if you want to shoot that little movie with the spots, this is really a problem. I would not buy in 2011 any camera wich sensor can not be accessed or if the manufacturer didn't provide a good dust removal system.

Why leave? I don't own any DMF gear but I love reading here and often I post in this forum. The information here is priceless no matter what system you use.

Ken I can't see what the selling of your p30 and blad gear has to do with quitting the forum.
You don't quit the local pub because your mug broke...

Nice one, Tomas.

However, by going in from the back like this, can you also get access to the front of the IR filter? Presumably that's where the dust problem would be worst. In your photo, I see the back of the filter.

Also, by staying around here, sharing your experience with that MFD system may well be appreciated by other users, new adopters, and those that are just considering taking the plunge...

Recently I also sold my H2 with P30+. I know how it feels, it was a hard decision, but I am sure it was the right one...

To counter all the MF gloom in this thread I'd like to add that I on the other hand have fallen in love with my P25 again. Working with the 5D mkII on a lot of commercial stuff lately I think I had somewhat forgotten just how superior the MF files really are. Sure, the convenience of the Canon is great for a lot of work, but just looking at IQ there's no competition. The dynamic range, the smooth transitions, the color tonality, and the way the files handle in post are quite frankly amazing. I just bought an 80mm f/1.9 too, and combined with my P25 it's just killer. It's a bit like going back to the roots, manual focusing, and I'm using a hand held meter again. I enjoy it, it's making me slow down and reflect more on what I'm doing. So to conclude, thank god we have choices in cameras and formats, even in this digital day.

When reading this, I almost thought this was going to turn into another "film vs. digital" debate again, until I realized that you were still referring to your P25. I do hope that digital MF is not in danger of becoming the new film...! ;)

God no, I used to shoot 6x7 alongside 1Ds mkII back in the day, but after seeing the files from my P25 I never touched film again. If my only digital option was small format though I might have considered going back to film for some of my work.
