An Annotated Bibliography
« on: May 25, 2011, 02:05:20 pm »

Last year I did an annotated bibliography for my students in Florida based on my own photographic library. For what it's worth, you can reach it here: http://www.externalconnections.info/lula/NewBib.html. It only scratches the surface, but if you've never scratched but want to be a photographer it might be worth your while.

I hope I misunderstood: you don't actually have all of these books, as in own, do you? Please say no; nobody should be so blessed!

Umm...Strand and Weston were primarily landscape shooters. What, aside from a great sense of timing, could possibly be learned from them?

Chuck, I'm not sure that's true. Strand shot a lot of landscapes, but his two most famous pictures were his shot of people on Wall Street and the family in Luzarra. Weston's most famous (in the sense of being well-known) were pictures of vegetables, though to me his finest is the one of Tina relaxing on the patio in the altogether. That one's a landscape all right, but not the usual kind.

Rob, Yep. Those are all in my library, plus a bunch I didn't list because they'd have been redundant. But you have to remember that I've been collecting photography books since the late fifties.

I remember telling you before that I didn't think you'd been wasting your time!

My problem has been that I was more drawn to magazines during the mid-50s period (couldn't afford books of that type then), and moving home meant that a lot had to be dumped. The interest in buying books really arrived more or less as I retired, and geography hasn't helped: France seems a great place for finding photography books but Spain not as much, though there is a hell of a lot of porn about, unfortunately. I have been disappointed seeing many books in the flesh (I didn't mean of or about, but yes, that would apply too), and as a consequence, I'm not comfortable with buying via Internet, sight unseen.

I envy you your collection.
