Nikon 24mm PCE on D300?
« on: May 18, 2011, 03:12:13 pm »

Hi,
Has anyone used a Nikon 24 PCE lens on a D300?  Can one still get a full range of movements, especially forward tilt?  Yes I am aware of the crop factor.

I've heard that the overhang from the prism can interfere with some movement. Same problem with my D700. I've thought of buying one just so I can use it as an excuse to buy a D3x. Somehow I don't think it's going to convince my moderating influence, aka 'the wife'.

There's a compatibility analysis for that lens on various cameras here, summarized in tables near the end.

I resemble that remark.

indeed, tilts are easy using the 24 PCE on the D300, it's just the shifting that you've got to watch since the prism/flash protrusion is always in the way, especially in the way of the knobs. Those knobs won't clear the front hump on the D200, D300/s, D700, especially when you need to do a lateral shift of the lens. They need to be on the bottom and the little lock knobs on the top!

What I find that I'm doing is making a shift and then having to rotate 180 degrees to make it work to put the knobs on the other side of the lens. It's sort of a pain, but it still works.

I also use both the 24 PCE and an 85 PC on my 300/s and 700. One thing thing I also use on occasion is a modified TC-14E converter, especially on the 300/s. That gets me a longer focal length and easier use of the lens since the knobs are now away from the body.

A caveat to watch for is to *not* release the lens since the little release button is easy to finger and release the lens when you rotate.

Another thing about both my lenses is that I've rotated the shift and the tilt mechanisms to be parallel rather than perpendicular since I find they are more useful to me in that configuration. It simply takes the careful removal of four screws and 90-degree rotation and replacement of the four screws. It's fairly easy though Nikon tells you to send it in for this service. When you live and work in the sticks, you can't go running to Nikon every time you need a simple fix!

That's bloody ironic: I never use the built-in flash on the cameras. Worse, I actually contacted a specialist Nikon dealer in London who assured me that the lens functioned perfectly with the D700. No wonder I grow more cynical every single day. Why not just dump the friggin' silly flash thing?

If anything makes those 17 and 24s on Canon look more attractive than ever... Were I still working, I'm sure I'd have had to be a multi-brand user again.

Those little built-in lights on the 200/300/700 are why I use these over the d2/d3 since I can control my wireless TTL with little effort. As I tell people, it's always there when you need it and if you don't like them, use a piece of duct tape to tape it down or grind 'em off with a Dremel!<LOL>

That little flash pays for itself for me time-after-time! even Canon is getting it with the wireless TTL on the 7D!

BTW, the 24 PCE works well, just watch the knobs and rotate them to the bottom for left-right shifting. With the aperture actuator, the D700 with 24PCE works pretty well hand-held when you've got to cut and run.
