IndustrialAge Locations in the UK?

From past experience I think that you will be lucky to find any old deserted factories in England - most areas have been redeveloped in the 80s/90s and very little inner city industrial areas have been left untouched. The only thoughts I can suggest are:

Bankside Power station, London - converted into the Tate Modern Art Museum
Battersea Power Station, London - supposedly protected, but still empty and undeveloped.
Millenium Mills, Docklands, London - awaiting redevelopment as part of the Bekton redevelopment area, though access is very difficult.

Someone may be able to suggest locations around Leeds, Yorkshire or perhaps around Manchester, Lancshire - this was part of the industrial heartland in the industrial revolution, though many of the original mills had been removed last time I looked.

There is an open air museum in Beamish which preserves a living industrial revolution town and mine. Details here:

hi everybody,

I will be spending some months in the UK on business and hope to take some time off for photography :-)

what I hope to find is/are old deserted factories reminescent of the industrial revolution comparable to the UNESCO-protected ones around Duisburg/Duesseldorf in the Rhineland in Germany.

In West Devon and Cornwall there are the remains of tin mines dating back to the 1800s. Mostly the shells of pumping houses with distinctive chimneys, some on dramatic clifftop locations. The Ironbridge open air museum might provide some pictures of artifacts from the early days of the iron industry and a recently closed steel mill in Rotherham is now a museum has all its rolling and smelting equipment intact. The last two would problably need some tight cropping to disguise the museum setting. I think there are still derelict coal mines and steel works in South Wales but I haven't been there for some years.
