Looking for travel case for light stands and tripod
« on: April 05, 2011, 08:36:16 pm »

I'm looking for a sturdy but light case for light stands and tripod.

Requirements: must fit four light stands, large tripod (Gitzo 5540LS), assorted photo gear. 100cm interior length minimum, light, sturdy, wheels. It would travel in the cargo hold of airplanes.

Pelican and B&W make nice cases, but the ones that are that long are gun cases, ie. not thick enough. The closest to my specs I've seen is Storm iM3220, but it's quite heavy at 9.3kg, although I'm doubtful a case with the specs above can be had for much less weight. Any alternatives?

Check out keyboard travel cases used by musicians. They come in a variety of sizes and styles, and are pretty much indestructible.

I may be in the market for such a case in the future and found this on the B&H website. I've used a Fiberbilt tube in the past but it does not have wheels.

I have had good results with the Lightware cases. They make a long rolling case that should carry your list. Not cheap, though.

Thanks for the tips. The keyboard cases I've found are similar to gun cases, ie. flat. Many are too long for air travel without extra charges, as is the case for some light stand cases linked above. I found this which would be perfect dimensions. No wheels, though, but since I'd be traveling with three bags it's pretty pointless to have wheels on all of them unless I sprout an extra arm...

Many wheeled duffles available, here's a link to one supplier...
