X-rite has released V1.0 of i1 Profiler, so those of us who've been testing it can now discuss it freely (this told to me earlier direct from X-rite BTW)

I'll be writing up some overviews of what it does (rather a lot), but I'm sure other members will be able to fill in more detailed quantitative measurements.

Guys, offhand do you know if there's any sort of demo mode available? Tried both with and without my ProfileMaker 5 dongle installed, and either way it complains about no license when you try to save a profile. Was hoping to be able to test before spending money on an upgrade.

Nope. But if you email a CGATs measured data file from PMP, I’ll see if I can build you something to compare (RGB preferably since CMYK means a lot of options).

Any personal observations you can share about the differences you're seeing in the new version? (And of course the age-old question: Will the upgrade be worth it?)

One thing I noticed immediately with monitor profiling was no support for the Eizo USB control channel. Manual screen brightness adjustment? That's a big step backwards - not that I ever really thought of PMP as a strong display profiling product, but I was hoping it might get better...

Wow, this is all so mysterious! I'm thinking I need to upgrade to something like that. In the fullness of NDA time, would like to hear free-speech opinions about this thing.

Seems that the person at X-rite who confirmed that I was OK to mention this was mistaken.

As such, I've temporarily removed any info from the page that wasn't in previous X-rite released info.

Sorry I can't say any more here ...for the moment ;-)

With the I1Profiler officially out now, do I need it?

Just got an email from our "friends" at x-rite pushing there new i1profiler software upgrade. It seems that I qualify for
I1Publish Upgrade A for 499.00 since I already own Monaco Profiler 4.8.3, and a I1 PRO, and a older Spectrolino/ Scan which I haven't touched since i got my HP printer and I only use my i1pro for profiling my NEC monitor using NEC Spectraview software.
My printer HP Z3200PS has a built in I1already and It came with HP Advance Profile which I use.
Is there any advantage to upgrading to this "new" software?

Since I've now been told for the second time I can talk about it :-)

I've found the profiles really smooth on our iPF8300 - they look good when printing my own images, that said, I always got good profiles from PMP5. The (visible) differences between good and better are very much a personal opinion (YMMV!). I look forward to seeing some of the comments from people more inclined to crunch the numbers and spreadsheets than I've time for...

In the longer term, i1 Profiler represents the foundation for X-Rite's profiling solutions, so updates and additional functionality will fit in with it. Support for older systems won't last for that long.

I guess it comes down to finances and how much you actually use the software...

You will absolutely want to stick with SpectraView to do the display calibration instead of i1P.

Hi Andrew,

While I understand the rationale behind that advice (higher bit accuracy LUTs), do you know of an existing on-line reference/test that quantifies exactly how beneficial it is?

I don’t. But the i1P display stuff is pretty darn crude IMHO (not top of all the high bit, ease of use, advanced calibration options in SpectraView).

Curiously enough I was testing an SVR271 last week with basICColor and the new Discus colorimeter. I also tested the software with a Spyder3 and i1 Pro

I've not published the details yet, but with the basICColor I'd rate the i1 Pro as performing the worst of the 3, with the rather pricy Discus producing profiles that were very good (it also produced excellent profiles for my old CinemaHD display too)

I also tried out i1 Profiler with the screen and it wasn't up to the profiles from basICColor - if I had that screen (it was a loan to test the Discus) I'd likely go with the NEC software.

The monitor profiling in i1 profiler works fine, but as Andrew says, its not really up there with the specialist software...

NEC's SpectraView is somewhat unique in that it's the only solution that has access to NEC's internal calibration hardware that they don't let 3rd parties access. And, of course, being able to use the internal calibration hardware is a big deal, but only for those with NEC displays. For non NEC displays, Color Eyes Display Pro, BasICColor and Spyder3Elite are all pretty top notch, IMO, with iterative calibration and full white point control.

Hmmm, yes, it appeasers NEC has given BasICColor access to this. Curious. CEDP confirms that they don't. I'll check with the Spyder3Elite product manager to confirm their status. Perhaps NEC is changing their tune on this.
