Do the more sophisticated (semi-pro) digital cameras use fractional increments of shutter speed and f-stop when determining exposure?

They generally use the same EV spacing that is available in M mode... Do you need narrower than 1/3 EV?

Good point. Then, in auto mode, an exposure adjustment is done in fractions of an EV covering both f-stop and shutter speed.
