new Canon 24-70 on the horizon?
« on: January 20, 2011, 02:48:54 pm »

I recently sold my 24-70/2.8, which I've had for about five or six years. (Though well cared for and maintained by Canon, I usually replace lenses every 5-10 years because of general wear and tear and the fact that they become harder to calibrate. The same happened with my 50/1.4 and 85/1.8.) Anyway, I went on line to search for the best pricing on the lens. I few references popped up for things like the Sigma 24-70, so I thought I'd compare MTF charts on the lenses. I went to Canon USA and could not fins a working page on the 24-70. Though it comes up in a search on Canon's site, there's no actual page. Just blank. I tried three different browsers thinking that it might be some quirk in the coding. Same result in Explorer, Firefox and Chrome.

I can't find anything concrete (or even vaguely rumored) on the net. Anyone heard anything or experienced the same thing?

It's there if you just navigate through the U.S. website:
24-70 f/2.8L

That's been rumored for a long time.  I'd love to see it, but I'm not holding my breath.  If you want to see all the rumors, take a look at DPReview.  Also, for canon related rumors, try this one: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/index.php They even have a subforum called Rumors and Predictions.

There is a wide expectation that the next generation of 24-70 from Canon and Nikon will feature IS/VR, but the truth of the matter is that none of us are aware of the actual technological challenges to implement this in a reliable and efficient way in such bright zooms.

I believe that this is why it takes so long on both sides.

Optically I don't think we can expect miracles, except perhaps if the designers decide to reduce the focus on some image characteristics that are easier to optimize in post processing, like distorsion.

Cheers,
Bernard

Maybe it's just wishful thinking.. but I suspect Canon will update both th 24-70/2.8 and come out with a 14-24mm/2.8 with the announcement of the long anticipated 1ds4..

Okay, it's wishful thinking.   ;D
