Julie's "Image a day project"
« on: January 08, 2011, 03:09:58 am »

I thought I would share here that I have commenced an image a day project for 2011!

My intention is to fine tune my observational skills, processing skills, camera craft, my creativity....and to have fun with it! I specifically am not committing myself to taking a photograph a day- although I will endeavour to do most days... but I am committed to creating an image - whether it be a new photograph, or processing one I haven't worked with before.

Have a look at my "Image a day site", and subscribe if you would like to be kept up to date at the end of every month with how I am going.

With the La Niña weather we've been having it looks like you'll have plenty of opportunities to get images for the clouds thread and my coloured waters thread.

By the way we must have similar minds as your Hindsight images go well with my outdoor chair series here:

http://www.tombrown.id.au/eclectic/outdoor_chairs/album/index.html

Just about to start a new project myself as I just been transferred at work and I'll be working in Woolloomooloo which looks like a great place for street photography.

Cheers,

Hey Tom..great chairs! I was keen to see if we had taken any of the same homes! :-) I took my Hindsight series photographs mainly in 2006 and 2007 when I drove from near Brisbane to Melbourne  a couple of times to exhibit - I don't enjoy flying!. Along the highway there were these homes with amazing front verandah chairs - just facing out on to the highway. I stopped and asked the owners if I could photograph their chairs and more often than not I would end up having a cuppa with them and being invited to look at their own family photographs hanging on their walls...which was the seed for my Hindsight series.

Yep...more clouds and more water.Devastating floods here in Queensland at the moment. Our farm has been under and the wet has made a mess of our business - but we are fortunate that our homes are high and dry.

Julie,

The aerial photos I've seen of the flood are simply heartbreaking. I'm so glad at least your homes are high and dry.
And you seem to be making excellent visual use of a bad situation. The images so far are first rate!

Tom,

Love your chairs, too!

Good luck, Julie!  I've sometimes thought about doing an 'image a day' project, but it's just not me.  I make photographs when I'm moved to do so.  O'coure I still have images in Lightroom from last April or May I have yet to look at...

Thanks Mike...I'm finding it difficult already because like you it 'really isn't me' either.... and I too am used to only taking images when I feel inspired and moved to do so, but I have a specific underlying purpose behind committing to this project.

My intention is to sharpen my camera craft and processing skills.Because I come from an art background rather than photographic one, I often have this inspired, urgent feeling in my belly to take a photograph, but because I have not yet developed my technical skills to a really proficient level, my inspiration is not supported fully. With this project I am committing myself to actually practice and develop my skills, rather than putting it off and just hoping that by some sort of osmotic phenomenon I will suddenly become proficient.  :)

Julie, Good luck with the project. I know you're an awfully good photographer, but a few of these shots indicate that you might want to clean your lens.

Russ, I respect your opinion, but I think that what is needed is Canon's WSW line of lenses. They are not well known but are perfect for the weather that Queensland is experiencing now.

A very rare photograph of the lens is shown below:

Russ, sometimes it's just not that easy!

(the last image I made that day, because a few seconds later I was swamped by a rogue wave coming over the seawall.  You'll be happy to know the camera's fine)

There's no hope for that one Mike. You need a new lens.

But wait, Mike. Isn't that Nessie reaching in from the left toward the center of the picture? Good thing she wasn't hungry.

Just woke to see the havoc in Toowoomba, 8 dead with a wall of water hitting the city. The flooding in Queensland is unbelievable. Hope all is well with you and your family.

Cheers,
It is such a tragedy. We had another 6 inches of rain last night and a storm is dumping torrential rain at the moment. Thank you for your thoughts Tom. We are fine. Our homes are safe. Our farm and business are an absolute mess - 6 weeks of heavy rain and can't harvest and very little orders, but that's what farming is all about and we will deal with that. There are so many more who are far worse than we.The real tragedy of loss of life is very sad.

Basis for a nice blues jacket; might even be a railroad replete with honky tonk train?

What you really want to do is turn off that rain for a bit.

I wish you could.
