Has anyone tried Dust Snapper from Visibledust?
« on: December 27, 2010, 01:03:49 pm »

Hi,

I received this email announcing a new product that attracks dust away from the camera while you are changing the lens.

Has anyone tried it and is it a noticeable improvement?

cheers,

…
Gary,
I don't know if it works or not but I understand that you use it when you work on your camera (cleaning the sensor or mirror box, etc).

They might want to note that it's 'lens', not 'lense' [/spelling_nazi_mode]

As for the magnetic action - how much dust is going to react to a magnet?

Pure snake oil, like many sensor cleaning products.

My guess is it's basically the same material as used for ESD mats. And what it's supposed to do by just putting a camera on it, I have no idea. No mention of size, but probably about 10" in diameter, and what a bargain at $35. And I sure wouldn't want to place a digital device on a magnet big enough to have any sort of effect.

PT Barnum is alive and well...

Hi!

I don't take your point, German spelling is Linse. Not all Germans were nazis, BTW, at least not after the war.

As for the magnetic action it's a very good point.

Best regards
Erik

Hehe, what they don't mention is that it is the airborne dust that is the issue. Dust would likely need to be in close proximity to the pad for it to have any effect. And since the optics ( and probably many of the newer lens barrels - i haven't tested) are non-conductive any charge on them that attracts the dust will not bleed off very quickly, so they will still attract dust.

So, until you neutralize the charge on the optics, then i don't think much is accomplished. And the human body can impose a lot of charge  right back  on the lens anyway.
