Marshall V-LCD50
« on: December 18, 2010, 09:10:07 am »

Interesting article posted here about the Marshall V-LCD50.  Does anyone know if the Canon 5D MkII and Canon 7D output live signals though the HDMI port?

They do when but not in addition to the camera's display.  IOW, if you use an ext. monitor then the camera screen will be off.

Also, the Canon cameras behave a bit differently depending upon the model.  The video via the hdmi port on the 5DMII and 60D drops to standard res. during recording.  On the 7D and 1DMIV it remains at HD.  This is a potential issue with the 5DMII/60D if you using the monitor to focus while shooting video.  Some folks live with it, some prefer the 7D/1DMIV because of that issue.

Thanks for the reply. To clarify, are you saying that what is visible on the Marshall monitor would be standard definition, or that the actual recorded footage would drop to standard definition because the monitor was plugged in?

The actual recorded footage always remains HD.  The image feed on the monitor from those two cameras (5DMII, 60D) drops to standard res. while recording.

Prior to recording (e.g. in Live View mode) it is HD, during recording you see in SD, reviewing a completed clip will be in HD.

Again, 7D and 1DMIV don't have this issue.

It might be coming out of the camera in HD, but the Marshall monitor is only 800x480px, so you only see the image resized either way.

Thanks.  I've seen some info on another monitor called a DP6 from smallHD http://www.smallhd.com/Products/DP6.html. Anyone have any experience with this?

It's not as cut and dried as that.  The bottom line, in terms the cameras that output SD while recording is that it's personal preference.  Some prefer the HD signal out to monitor focus, many are fine if it doesn't and work with it as is.  If you are new to these cameras you need to do some test runs with the setups to make sure they'll work for you.
