New HP printerdriver for HP Z3100 (Mac)
« on: November 11, 2010, 08:25:11 am »

For the people that did not dare to try it yet...
At last HP seems to has fixed the very very slow communication when printing from Photoshop CS5 with the HP Z3100
The new printerdriver 4.2.3 seems to be far more responsive. ( it came with software update)

Great news, but two weeks too late for me - my Z just died and I don't plan to replace it - too expensive to get a tech out here to check and see what might be wrong - so I bought a Canon for about the price of the included ink. I figure my original Z made me a couple hundred grand or more so I will give her a good burial...

I thought I'd put a lot of miles on mine, but obviously not (by those standards).  Just curious, what were the symptoms that your Z3100 succumbed to?  Which Canon did you go with, and how do they stack up against one another in terms of print quality?  Are you happy with the Canon's black and white prints?

Geez, mine hasn't made me nearly that much!  Do you think something's wrong with it?  ;-)

The first print order was for nearly 1/4 of that so it was and easy road from then on. I don't remember now what the number was but I kept getting an error message and it would not boot up - kept kicking her for a week but still nothing would happen. With the price of the new Canon 8300s being so darn cheap right now it was easy to just buy a new printer rather than trying to get an HP tech out to my area in the middle of no where from Texas or wherever they would have had to come from - I'm sure even to replace a cheap part it would have been a large bill just to save an hold printer that has been a great tool. The print quality from the new Canon is wonderful, and in fact it is also much easier to use and now the printer will even cut my heavy canvas prints for me like it should instead of having to do it manually as with the old Z. In fact I like this new Canon so much that I just ordered a second one as a backup - plus I'll be able to use the ink, the extra spindle, and will have fresh print heads too when needed. I don't do Black and White so can't comment on that - I've always heard that the Zs are the best in that area and if you are a serious in that area you probably already know more about the specs than I. Oh yes, and now they are $500 cheaper than last month and they come with a free iPad for crying out loud, ha! I loved the old Z but it was time. I'd gladly give this printer to anyone who wanted to come pick it up - I live about 60 miles out in the backwoods of Arkansas.

Damn, don't throw it away.  I wish I could drive down to Arkansas from Atlanta. I could use it for parts if nothing else!  Almost certainly it is the Hitachi hard drive that is located on the logic board. I've been there as have many of us. You can replace that part yourself easily. I had mine replaced by the tech and it took him 10 minutes. He just popped it in. I wish I had watched him closer now. I went in the kitchen for some coffee, came out and it was done. A manual is available for the Z on that wiki.

These hard drives are known to fail. Personally I think Hitachi quality control has gotten bad, at least on these that HP used. I had to have a new Hitachi that I put in my in my Mac replaced after 6 months. The tech couldn't even remove the data it was so screwed up. Mine in the Z failed after 2 years. Some people have had two of them put in.

They pop these logic boards that control everything in and out in a few minutes too, in my case he just put both of them in without even analyzing the hard drive though he knew that was the culprit. It isn't like the main board of the Epsons that demands a lot of effort, alignment, and reprogramming to install.

Despite some of the questionable parts used in the Z series, like the belt and the hard drive, this is a printer that can be easily have the components switched out to restore the printer. Most of the other printers are gone completely after the carriage and or heads wear out.

I'm thinking about a Canon 8300 in February myself. But I will certainly want to keep the Z going for black and white if nothing else. The dmax is just wonderful. I've been doing some gorgeous prints on an uncoated natural kozo paper this week and nothing can touch it, and it even profiled right in the printer in 20 minutes without me being in the room. I wish the Canon had that kind of dmax on matt media but they are more like Epson.

It just occurred to me that you MAY have to replace the logic board that has the hard drive on it. That is what my guy did. But he said they do this because it is "easier and quicker" than removing the hard drive. Since I didn't look at it I'm not sure if this is the case or not.

It would easily cost me more than a thousand bucks to get anyone from HP out here to look at this even if the part were free - buying a new Canon was a much wiser move and I have no plans to get the HP fixed. But if anyone is interested, I'll be happy to help them load it up before I toss it!
