50 HR-W or 47 XL for the RL3D
« on: November 07, 2010, 04:53:49 am »

Hello all,

I'm looking for some user advice on lenses. I'm getting a new lens that's around the 50mm area for my RL3D, cost has some influence but I'm prepared to get what is best. I currently have only Rodenstock lenses. The Rodenstock 50mm HR-W is £2800 + VAT (in r-mount) in the UK, the Schneider 47xl is £1600 + vat in r-mount. Is it a no-brainer to get the 47xl? What do you use in this focal range? The 47xl has a pretty big image circle compared to the rodenstock, although 90mm on the 50 is still very useable. Also thinking about putting the saved money towards the 28xl.....but then I do like having an all Rodenstock set, but that's beside the point!!

Thanks

Nick

the 47 XL shine around F11 (by the way, there's a new 43XL) while i suspect the 50 to be already good wide open... there is also a new 60XL...

if you intend to use it at F11 with movement, the the 47XL is good, otherwise the 50 must be better... a question of goal...

I had to google RL3D ... ;)

Fwiw, I'm using the non-digital 47XL on Sinar with a Leaf Aptus 75, with very good results.
It's been recommended by my Leaf rep, and didn't disappoint.

It's working very well with higher apertures and movements; I have no experience with the digital version, though.

Thankyou for the comments. Movements are a must, shooting between f8-11.

60xl?..I'll look into that.

The 43xl looks a fantastic lens, but really need something that sits in the middle between my 35HR and 70HR

mind you, numbers are just numbers for marketing purpose... maybe the 43 is in fact a 44 and the 47... a 46... both will sit in betwen the 35 and the 70 !

in my opinion, a 55 is much closer to a 70, than a 45 to a 35 !

i have 35,45,55,90,120M,180... the 45 was the final addition to the kit... at the end, i'm using it the most !
