Another LR3 Snag Report
« on: August 16, 2010, 05:02:39 am »

Lr 3.2 RC seems to be running quite smoothly for me now, and I did quite a bit of importing, editing and printing over the weekend. But I have two more little snagettinos to offer up for the experts here –

• This is probably not a bug, but something I have overlooked. In Lr 2x when I imported files, in the Develop module it always created an Import Snapshot by default. Now, in Lr 3, there is no Import Snapshot. I have to remember to create one myself, so that I can return to first base if I want to. Am I missing a switch or checkbox somewhere in the Import routine?

• This one I think is a real bug, and I am posting it here (as well as sending a bug report to Adobe) because I know that Eric reads these posts and he is The Man. If I apply an EV brush adjustment to a picture after using the new Highlight Vignette, the brush also affects the vignette – in practice by darkening it (making the highlight masking less effective). Obviously, this should not happen.

• Not a snag, but a really good improvement is that the Highlight Recovery slider seems to have been fine-tuned in Lr 3. It now really does just affect the brightest highlights, without taking the punch out of the rest of the high tones. Watch out though, for pictures that you have previously edited in Lr 2x where the recovery slider was used – when converted to PV 2010 you will sometimes see a brightening of the overall highlights as a result.

Hi John,

For #1, I believe this was by design. That is, the team decided to get rid of the import snapshot. I don't know the full reasons, but I suppose it may be because there are other ways to get back to the beginning (e.g., by going backwards in the History panel to the first step, or by clicking the Reset button to return to the defaults, etc.)

For #2, yes, this is a limitation in the current design/implementation in how local adjustments work with Exposure. Unfortunately I don't have a timetable for a fix.

Eric

Thanks for responding. Shame about the Import Snapshot, I that was something which I always found handy. Now I shall just have to remember to create my own snapshot as a first move. Especially as I always delete my history panel as I go along, and rely on snapshots to retrace my steps. The vignette/brush adjustment problem is a bit more nasty, potentially, because if you are working close in with the brush it is very easy to miss what has happened. It would be nice if this could be fixed in 3.3 or 3.4, perhaps.

John, I felt the same way and this plug in will allow you to select a folder of images and create a snapshot of the original which you name 'import'...it's freeware but they ask for a donation if you use it so give 'em a few bucks if you can...

once the plug-in is installed you access it via the File menu in the library module and click on 'plug-in extras'...just select all the images in a folder and it'll create what you want...

I don't know why they removed it from lightroom 3, and now it's an extra step to create that import view for the develop module but at least it's possible...i kinda got used to using it too...

adios

M

ps...got this thanks to Victoria Bampton, alias, the lightroom queen...

interesting, i only just noticed the snapshot thing myself.

real shame it has gone, i was not one of the requestees...didn't even know it was requested/slated for removal.

Eric - why just cahnge this, instead fo giving us the preference to have it on or not?

That same argument could be used for every feature change. Just imagine how many preferences you'd soon end up with.
