Which medium format film camera on the cheap?
« on: August 11, 2010, 11:43:34 pm »

I am studying some certificates in photography, and am wondering which medium format, film based, camera system to buy?

I have a 1955 Agfa Isolette II in excellent condition, but there is no rangefinder nor any light meter.
Furthermore, it is manual focus and you have to set the distance manually by estimating.
That's too much messing around just to take a picture!

I wish to purchase a secondhand MF system (relatively cheaply) that has a coupled rangefinder function and built in light meter. Autofocus would be great but not essential.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

For cheap rangefinder MF you could consider a Mamiya Universal.
But be careful what you buy - theres a lot of crap on Ebay and the shutter times of the lenses leaf shutters are often adventurous.

Or slightly less cheaply, you could buy a Mamiya 6 or 7. Or for a fixed lens mf rf a fuji GS(W) 670 or 690

The Mamiya 6 and 7 have a light meter, aperture priority auto exposure and probably the best mf lenses ever

There have been many MF rangefinders, but wanting a built-in light meter narrows the field considerably.
Wanting to get it "relatively cheaply" narrows it even more!

Pricier options with a meter:
- Mamiya 6 and 7, as Mike said
- Bronica 645RF...these and the Mamiyas are the only ones I know with changeable lenses
- Plaubel Makina 67, in two versions (80/2.8 or 55/4.5)
- New Fuji/Cosina 67

Cheaper options with a meter (all 645 format):
- Fuji GS645, in three versions (75/3.4, 60/4, or 45/5.6)
- Fuji GA645 (AF)
- Fuji GA645z (AF + zoom)
