Deleting earlier versions of Photoshop
« on: July 07, 2010, 04:08:35 am »

Just to be clear, on my laptop I have PS7 (full version), CS2 upgrade, CS4 upgrade (just acquired and waiting for my free CS5 upgrade). Same on desktop, except PS7. As I understand it the upgrade installs on the machine as a self contained programme, rather than sitting on top of previous versions. Therefore, once I'm happy CS5 is running satisfactorily on my machine, I can safely delete earlier versions, or at least I can delete 7/CS2 and keep CS4 as back up.

Wright or wrong?

They are independent. You can keep or delete the old versions.

I always keep the old version until I'm sure I haven't used it for several months. Right now I have CS5, CS4, and CS3. It's time to get rid of CS3.

IF you do delete, do it properly. Deactivate then use the Uninstaller app (at least on the Mac, its found in the Utilities folder).

And one more tidbit: if you have CS3 or CS4 on your system even when using the uninstaller for them, they may still delete a needed shared folder that CS5 needs to run.  So when you next re-launch CS5 you may get an error message indicating a file is missing and need to do a repair-re-install of CS5 to get it back.

Never had this happen to me on the Mac (and as an alpha and beta tester, I’ve had to uninstall more times than I can remember). Are you on Windows?

I just had the same experience on a Mac.  I de-activated CS3 and CS4 and then removed them with the uninstaller.  I got the same error message on launch...and solved it by re-installing the needed file with Time Machine.  The uninstaller also apparently deleted some of the camera profiles for ACR, which I also had to re-install.

I put the upgrade CS5 on my laptop,, Had no previous version on it  after a new hard drive was installed on it.. All it asked for was the serial number from a qualified version, (I already had CS3) so used that number and CS5 installed without a problem. DAve

Nope, I'm on Mac and know several other folks that had this same issue.  And it's an irregular issue -- I got the error when I nuked older version off my Mac Pro, but not when I did same on my Macbook Pro.

Yep.

Now keep in mind that CS5 is not totally usable on its own anyway:
- I am still not sure how to print with it and prefer the way it was done in CS4(page set up, profiles,...)
- The 64 bits version of CS5 is still lacking support of some key plug-ins, starting with Nik Software... boy those guys are slow.

Cheers,
Bernard

NoiseNinja too. They (ever so helpfullly) point out that you can quit CS5, check the "32-bit mode" box and restart it.
