7900 issue (ink splatter)
« on: June 19, 2010, 12:20:51 pm »

Hey guys,

I did a canvas print today 20x30 and I noticed random areas with dark ink (looks like its blue in color). The dots are very small, but they are on areas that are white so I had to cancel the job halfway through. I am using Breathing Color Lyve and have the paper set to WCR and platten at wider.

I am running a clean cycle right now hoping this fixes the issue. Has anyone else experienced this?

I ran a nozzle check and it was fine, but I went ahead and did two things.

I ran a clean. Then I ran a thickness pattern test. 7 was the number so I set the paper to this and tried the print again. No ink splatters.

I had it happen to me one time on both of my printers,7900 and 9900. After a clean no further issues and its been 3 months. (Knock on wood!)

I have seen this on the 9900, each time it has been dust on the head that is gathering ink and the ink follows along the dust or hair until there is enough accumulation then drops on the page. Usually at the extremities of the page as the carriage stops causing the drops to fall, but can be in the image area too.

It sounds like the i1 profile OSX Colorsync through CS print dialog profile issue...  For whatever reason i1 profiles do this while Epson factory profiles don't, but it's a known incompatibility of the i1 profile with colorsync.

The epson manual says this can happen when the distance between the media and printhead is too great.  They recommend reducing the suction strength.  It was in the troubleshooting section if I remember correctly.  I was getting blue ink splatter when using A3 sheets on the 9900 while suction was at maximum.  Reducing the suction one notch solved the problem.
