5DII aftermarket Battery grips?
« on: June 10, 2010, 12:10:59 pm »

Was thinking about buying an aftermarket battey grip from B&H and was wondering if anybody has had any problems with these and or if they are just as good as the Canon versions?
Thanks a lot

Maybe nobody replied to your question till now, because you ask "if anybody has had any problems", and simply there are no problems, except that it does not say CANON on them, a thing I actually like about it. I bought mine at B&H half a year ago and had no problem so far.

I bought a non branded grip for my 5DII a while ago and sent it back after only a week, it looks exactly the same as the Canon version, but doesn't quite function as good. The area on the bottom where you would screw in a tripod mount had no "beef" to it and felt really thin, so after screwing on a plate and clicking it into the tripod, it wobbled considerably. Also the grip couldn't communicate battery info very well, and even though I was using a freshly charge battery, the camera would think it was nearly flat and not work after only an hours use. Also the vertical shutter button felt bit "clicky" compared with the smooth action of the 5DII's.

Not saying they are all like this, but my one went back straight away and I have missed using a vertical grip since upgrading to the 5DII

You need to get an aftermarket charger with your aftermarket batteries. The Canon charger won't charge them.

When you use them you'll get a message saying they're not genuine, do you want to continue? Then it won't show you remaining charge.

My aftermarket grip works perfectly and feels solid.

I recently got one from these people, and so far it's functioning perfectly. The buttons aren't quite of the same quality as Canon, but it's more or less there.

Using Canon's own batteries with it, although the generic ones that it ships with make adequate backups.

You might be lucky and find a product that meets both ergonomical requirements and is made of materials that do not poison you. I was not, the aftermarket battery grip I tried was stinking terribly and the covers were made of cheap, soft plastic. You can imagine where this product was made, and how chemicals will evaporate over the time. The functionality was good, it was solidly build and the buttons operated ok.

I decided to send it back and go with the original grip. Of course the original is heavily overprices.
