Leica S2 price crash in Europe!
« on: June 07, 2010, 06:22:45 pm »

For all US buyers, it is now dramatically cheaper to buy the S2 in Europe that USA.

at current Euro:Dollar rates, its under $21,500 for an S2 body together with the 70mm lens.
thats a $5000 saving on the $27,500 it would cost you in the USA.

Leica badly need to make a rebate offer to US buyers, (free lens?) or they are going to see a lot of grey and personal imports

How much is the import duty and handling cost, and transportation cost? Any State tax involved for imports?

Cheers,
Bart

What is Leica North America/USA warranty policy for "gray" market S2s?

For most other big brands it's the reverse for many, many years now (US much cheaper than Europe) and they seem to have survived

Dont forget that the majority of European prices for professional equipment are shown exclusive of VAT (Value Added Tax - Sales Tax), each country has different rates but most are in the region of 20%.

Aaron, Americans visiting Europe (and probably all other foreigners) if charged VAT, are provided with forms to get refunded VAT when they leave the country.

it is my understanding that it does not matter where in the world you buy a leica, warranty will be honored worldwide.
should be from a authorized dealer or distributor though.

ZERO. personal import. many people have done it.
Zero sales tax too if its exported. your only cost will be the FedEx shipping.

no reason to buy one from a USA dealer anymore, unless you want to throw $5000 out the window.
