Dear All,

There are many international salons being held all over the world.
Are the prints in the exhibitions art? Photography art?

I've seen a clear "invasion" of photography in ARCO in the recent years.
Photography, and specially since digital, is now fully represented in contemporary art international salons like ARCO.
Not only on the form of prints.

Now a photographer can exhibit in what where before the traditional circuits for painters and sculptors. No more barriers.

In Madrid, more and more painting galleries are showing photographers.

Best regards.

Do you mean it is more close to painting or digital painting? rather than photography?

Not at all. I'm talking about pure photography. Clients, collectionists are interested more and more, and galleries are more and more involved with the photography language,
in any form. (of course there are hybrids techniques also)
This tendency is cristal clear in the latest years.
Photography is starting to sell higher than it was etc...

I won't be surprised if it become what the painting was before, in the art circuits.

I actually had to check the date stamps on this thread.  I thought maybe this thread was started 40 or 50 years ago.  Or longer.

Photography has been 'accepted' as an art form for decades.  The major museums and galleries around the world have had photography in their permanent collections for many years.  With more recent advances in inkjet printing, most of these same galleries and museums now include inkjet prints in their permanent collections.  Knowledgeable art buyers and collectors have included photography in their collections for a long time.  Some collect only photography.  Some celebrities are well known collectors of photography (Elton John, Madonna).

The places where photography still isn't accepted as art to as high a degree are where you find the less informed buyer/show organizer, the 'Thomas Kinkade' type of buyer, small(er) city/town art groups.

Hi BobFisher,

It is not a question that photography is an art form. However, what is the theme of this thread is on those contemporary International Salon.

OK, I guess I misunderstood.  When I saw "Are the prints in the exhibitions art?  Photography art?"  I guess I thought there was a question as to whether photography was art.

If the question is whether what's being displayed in these salons is art then I guess I'd have to ask what else would it be.  If the question is whether photography should be included then I guess I'd have to ask why it shouldn't be.  If the salons are for art and photography is a form of art, then photography should be included in these exhibits.

Or are you asking why photography isn't included in these exhibits?

Perhaps some clarity on what the question is would help.
