Glacier National Park this June
« on: May 16, 2010, 05:40:01 pm »

We will be in Glacier this June. It will be my first major landscape outing with the M9. I will be using a 35 f/2, 50 f/2 and a 90 f/2.8 and a tripod.  We will not be doing any extended hiking, but will be doing short walks off of the Going To The Sun Road and exploring in our SUV. This is our first trip to the area, so any tips would be very much appreciated. I already have the Photography America Newsletter on Glaicer that was updated in 2008 (it provides a lot of imformation on potential locations) and a lot of material on the park and the surrounding area.
Thanks
Bob

Should be a great trip. Suggest you check out Bowman Lake in the Northwest corner of the park. See this threadBowman lake for more info. My wife and I were there in 2008 with our Minivan and kayak. The road is not great but should not be a problem for your SUV. (Or even a normal car).
The hike to Avalanche Lake is well worth it. If you don't want to hike all the way to the lake, you should do the first part along Avalanche Gorge. See  Visit My Website for a little more information.
Have a great time.

Avalanche Lake was a pleasant hike. We started as soon as it was light enough to see (which in Glacier in July is pretty early in the morning), and saw no other hikers on the way up, then had an hour or so to ourselves at the lake. A pretty and photogenic spot.

On the way down we met a couple of hundred hikers heading up. Would have been a much different experience had we started the hike at 8am.
