Pink mask on adjustment brush

This is probably really stupid but I can't find out how to deal with this. On one of my macs if I use an adjustment brush it just paints the pnk mask over the area to show the extent of the mask and not the effect. So if I set the brush to reduce exposure by 1/3rd stop and increase contrast and then paint all I see is the pink mask not the effect.
On another mac it operates as it always has - paint over an area and the parameters in the box are applied in real time. I must have turned something on somewhere but I can't work out what or how to stop it.
Any thoughts

Toggle the mask overlay off and on with the "O" key.

Also, the fact that it looks pink and not the usual red, might indicate brush "density" is lower than 100%. Or maybe we just call the same color differently: you see it as pink and I see it as red

Thanks. That worked perfectly. Stupid I spent at least 2 hours over the last few days trying to find the answer.

If you don't like pink (or red), Shift+O will toggle the mask colours.
