length of usb cable and art papers for epson R1900 ?
« on: April 08, 2010, 11:43:29 pm »

Hello:

I'm new to this forum and dipping my toe in the water with the Epson R1900.

I have two questions:

1) Epson says I should use no longer than a 6-foot usb cable for my printer.  I really need to place it further away, maybe  10-12 feet from my usb 2.0 connection.

I've been told that it woud be fine with a single 10 or 11-foot cable.
I've also read that you can use two 6-foot cables and connect them with a powered usb hub.
Is anyone here using these or any other techniques to place their usb-connected printer more than 6 feet from their computer?

2) I've been reading that some fine art papers can leave fibers in the R1900 than can later cause paper feeding problems.
Are there any papers that would minimize this problem with the R1900?  What else can be done to prevent the build- up of these fibers and the resulting paper feeding problems?

Thanks in advance for any help.

John

Max Length for a single USB 2.0 Cable is 5 Meters (~16 Ft).

Get a horsehair dusting brush and brush off both sides of the paper before feeding it to the printer.  This will minimize but not eliminate buildup on the rollers.  You can get cleaning papers from Epson and other sources that can be run through the printer to pick up the residues (that may need to be done every couple of months depending on your printing load).

As long as you have a high-quality USB cable, 10-12 feet should not be a problem. If not, a powered USB hub won't help. The purpose of a powered hub is to provide power to USB peripherals that draw more power than the computer's USB port can provide - it does nothing to amplify the USB signal itself. You can use a USB extender, however, which is designed specifically for enabling long USB cable runs.

I am getting 30' of reliable USB using two Trendnet 15' USB 2.0 Extender Cables. They are relatively inexpensive and work like a charm! Here is link to them at B&H: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5063...0_Extender.html
