Just got this general purpose lens for my new 7D, and it really seems to be a nice lens. 15-85mm on a 1.6 crop of course translates to a 24-136mm on a FF.

Was curious how this setup compared to the 24-105mm on a 5DII.

From the 600 or so images I have taken so far, I am very pleased with this combo.

From a sharpness point of view, the 24-105 on the 1Ds Mrk3 is very good from 24 - 50mm peaking at 35mm. It goes down hill from 70 - 105mm where I use my 70-200mm f2.8 IS if I want better quality. It's a very useful lens but a tad on the slow side.

It seems that this EF-S lens finally received some L qualities:
review & comparison.

Thanks for the input.

I bought the EF-S-15-85mm because of reviews like that one, and it really seemed to shine when compared to the other EF-S (and even EF) lenses. But I was curious how it stacked-up next to the 24-105 L specifically.

I've been working on taking images of Florida wildflowers, and this lens is great for getting a "whole plant" shot, then I can zoom in a bit and get a close-up of the leaves & stem, and I can even get some pretty nice super-close "macro" shots of just the flower ... all with the same lens (no gear change necessary) ... and all of my images consistently come out sharp and full of rich color & contrast.

I was thinking about getting the 24-105mm, but I can't imagine it doing a better or more versatile job than the 15-85mm, so I was curious if anyone has both lenses and/or has made a direct comparison of the two.

Thanks again for both responses.

Jack
