Color Management: Aperture to Photoshop
« on: March 21, 2010, 12:55:40 pm »

I have recently begun to encounter a problem with printing custom page sizes from Aperture (2.1.4) to my Epson 7800. I get  a client error message from the Print Monitor, then the Print Monitor lists the print as "Stopped".  Epson tech support was of no help, so as a work-around I've tried printing the file (at 24 x 30 inches) from Photoshop. This works, the file prints, but the rub is that my color management, which has always been trouble-free in Aperture, has gone haywire.

Can anyone help w/ the correct set of color management and profile (Moab entrada and MK ink) settings to print file from PS that match files printed from Aperture?

Alternatively, has anyone encountered the custom page size problem in Aperture, and solved that?

Thanks

I upgraded to AP3 (and did the 3.0.1 update fix) and have had really good luck printing straight from aperture to both a Z3100 and a canon pro9500

when we had 2.1.x always had some kind of color troubles to fix (although they were slight) so we usually exported the final version to photoshop for printing but now I think Apple has finally got there stuff together - i don't use the faces and maps stuf yet as it has slowed down workflow -

also we have 10000 + photos in each of 2 libraries and used to have a lot of small format troubles but 3.0.1 seems to have fixed that also

you might want to upgrade but make sure you immediately also do the 3.0.1 fix at installation before you convert any photos from the 2.1.x libraries

I forgot to address your last question - ap3 does a really good job with custom page sizes - we always had trouble printing multiple wallet size on a 8 x 10 paper (8 per sheet or whatever) but with ap3 if you remember that the margins plus the image size must add up to the paper size it works great and ap3 shows you a preview before you print

good luck

Thanks for your reply.
Have you used any large custom page sizes in AP3?  Any thing larger than 17 x 22 (24 x 30 and 24 x 24) has been the problem for me w/ AP2. My color/gamma match has always been reasonably good in AP2, so as long as the print size is no problem, I am good. It's when I go out to PS that colors go haywire.

Actually I haven't tried in AP3 - I have a z3100 and have used photoshop for a few 24 x 30 prints when i was still using ap2

i will need to print a few 24x30's in the next week or so I will let you know but so far size doesn't seem to affect the color

i usually work in photoshop as a final step in my workflow before large prints but with the added tools in ap3 i just might give it a try

Still hoping for some input/insight on the problems stated above in the top post:
1) Cannot print to my Epson using larger custom page sizes.
2) Using my work-around to print larger sixes, I go to PS, resize and print from PS, but output color from PS is way off from my display color!

Help, please?
