The new Profoto Battery generators
« on: March 15, 2010, 05:41:37 pm »

What do you guys think of the new Profoto battery generators?

I blogged about it earlier today and was a bit like an old nagging guy because I had such high hope for the new generators

but the B2 and the Acute 600b were already an outstanding products so any improvements should be welcomed

whats up with the "worlds fastest battery pack" statement from profoto?

the verso a2 pack recharges in 1.5 sec, the b3 in 1.8 sec.

They must mean "the worlds fastest **battery only** packs."  See, the Verso also take AC, which is a disadvantage because ... uh ... I'll think of it, just give me a minute .... oh yeah!... you could trip on the cords!

Just kidding, both make good gear of course. I didn't check the times either, so it is **Pauls fault** if we are wrong!

I am surprised that they aren't asymmetrical, per the blog post?  Otherwise nice to see new equipment. But kind of bad too, because that makes mine more dated, which helps it depreciate - not that I use it anymore ...

Cheers! Have fun.

Battery compatibility between the 7B and the B3 - really nice that they took that into consideration.
I am somewhat surprised that even with the new battery technology, the B3s are still heavier than the heaviest of the Rangers, though not by much.

I have the Hensel Porty 12 which also uses a lithium battery. A tad lighter than the B3 (5.9kg vs 6.4kg) and recycles to full power 1200w is 1.95 seconds.

The porty 6 is a quite a bit  heavier than the B2 (5.4kg vs 3.6kg) although the recycle to full power is just 0.95 with the porty vs 2.0 secs for the B2.

The flash duration is shorter for both the profotos.

What Hensel doesn't mention is that the connecting cables between the pack and heads weigh 1.4kg each, how heavy are the cables for the profoto?

I think the cable is never in the pack weight,  but the Pro cables are similar to Hensel's

If  B3 could be run without battery through main outlet it would kill sales of the 7a and 7s and even 8a (at least the 1200ws packs). the specs of b2/b3 are quite close to the bigger ones

I'm thinking about just getting 3 of these new batteries for the B2 even though it's pretty expensive

and then maybe they will announce the D4b or B4 something next photokina. in few months there will also be battery for the D1

cheers,

Bernhard Kristinn

on battery, the broncolor versoA2 recycles faster, has 650w (or 2x 300w) mod light and is fully asymetric.
without battery, it is a great studio generator.

..., and it has 3 lamp sockets, RFS radio triggering, can go down to 9Ws and takes the complete range of lampbases. - Since 2006.
I´m curious what Bron will introduce at the Photokina.

Cheers, Ulf

actually the bron versoA2 weight is only 7.5 kg.
the battery is heavy indeed: 12 kg.

I spoke with the procentre in the Uk and the price for the Acute 600 B2 Air s is 1650 Uk + VAT

The B3 1200 Air is going to be 3750 UK + VAT.

You can pick up one of the older models with a free head if you don't need the lithium battery.

http://www.procentre.co.uk/profoto.html

probably cheaper than what you will have to pay in Vienna at the digital store/knips

What's worth considering if you don't already have profoto equipment is that one can buy the Hensel Porty 12, with 2 speed heads, case & stands for 3370 Uk + VAT.

Hensel also have an adaptor for 650 Uk, that allows the porty to run off the mains as a normal studio generator.

It would be nice to have a choice of batteries and battery sizes for the Verso. Maybe an adapter where you could plug in or attach a variety of Bron lithium, gel, or generic 3rd party batteries?

In the past I would use the Mobil for some jobs, the Verso for others, depending on the type of shoot, weight I was willing to carry, etc.
