Booyah!!!

- Will that be a 2 CPU offering?
- Will a matched high end SSD be offered as an option?
- Will it have more than 8 memory slots (12 would probably be best)?

Cheers,
Bernard

That would be the Core i7 980x processors.

Nice.  I'm glad I didn't build a new PC and waited for these.

Keep in mind that these are not Xeon processors, they're desktop LGA 1366 socket processors, which means people can replace they're older i7 processors with these (if they have a PC).

Next month, there will be 8 core Xeon processors (Nehalem-EX, different socket) coming out with an even larger cache (and price).

It's possible that in the near future, Apple (and PC server motherboards) will offer a system with 1 to 8 processor sockets, each for a new 8 core Xeon processor, which would give you a system with 128 processing threads/64 cores, but those are mostly targeted for servers... monster servers.

CBarrett, can I borrow some money?

Ok sorry, but as far as I can understand there are also drawbacks to this approach. First of all getting more than 12GB RAM on a I7 System is really expensive compared to a Xeon System. ( Only 6 RAM slots compared to 12 or even 18 on a Xeon board)

Second where did you hear that there will be any 8-core CPUs next month ? I haven't what will come are new 4/6 Xeon CPUs from intel. If you use a board with 2 CPUs you get 8 / 12 cores.
