HELP: Nikon D3000 Remote Capture
« on: January 25, 2010, 01:47:31 pm »

Hey everyone,

As some know, I'm a Canon User. And Canon cameras come with the remote capture software as part of the native CD bundle ( EOS Utility has the remote capture controls ).

But I have a friend who owns a Nikon D3000. And wants to take pictures using the USB tethered shooting settings.

I have done some self portraits on the Canon, using Remote Capture with timer. It was really sweet, easy to use, you just pose and hear the beep and hold the pose, and keep moving. It really works nice. I have the handheld remote for the Canon 300D, and it doesn't work with the 40D, and also, I used to show having the remote in my hands in every photo, which I disliked.

So, the perfect solution for this friend, who wants to do self portraits, would be a USB tethered remote shooting capacity. And set a timer, that takes a photo every 5 seconds or so.

BUT:

1 - Nikon seems to charge for the Camera Control Pro software.

2 - The D3000 seems unsupported by the software, he has been trying to connect, and no luck.

A while ago, I heard a tale that Nikon would STOP charging in separate for the remote capture software. It's US$179 on Amazon, which I consider a rip-off.

So, here goes a couple of questions from friendly Nikon users:

1 - Is there any alternative he could do, or alternative software he could use? Even if non-free, cheaper.

2 - The Nikon D3000 has USB remote capture capacity?

I know the C1 supports several cameras, and does remote shooting, but C1Pro is currently US$399, and this guy owns a Photoshop CS4 license, so, why on earth would he want to pay more than the Nikon Camera Control, to have a software just for tethered shooting?

Thanks everyone in advance for your feedback

Kisses,

Jessica

Take a look at http://oxfordeye.co.uk/tetherPro/tetherPro.aspx [$50] for pc or http://www.sofortbildapp.com/ [donationware] for mac.
Check D3000 is compatible though.

other options also detailed here: http://thephotogeek.com/choosing-nikon-dsl...oting-software/
