BIG SUR LOCATIONS -- LAST WEEK OF JAN
« on: January 17, 2010, 10:38:14 am »

Hi,

I am going to be in the Big Sur area the last week of January.  I would appreciate any tips that anyone can give me regarding the following:

1.  Sunset locations:  Beaches

2.  Sunset locations:  overlooks with a broad view of the rugged coast

3.  Waterfalls

Also, any tips on the butterflies at Pismo Beach and the elephant seals at Piedras Bancas?

Many Thanks!!

With this massive storm that will and is pounding us for the next 5 days I would be very careful and try to stay up to date on what going on from there.  They will have hugh flooding going on and land slides, If you come in from the Carmel area heading down you will still get the best scenery but not hit the landslides.  By the way the rule of thumb is if its green it probably poison oak.  Make sure you bring stuff for that.  But the best way is to take every trail on the ocean side of the road.  Garrapata Beach, Point Lobos,Have fun.  Tim

ditto... and remember Garrapata means 'tick' .... but the beach is great, down the trail to the beach are nice creeks that after this set of storms should be quite full... beaches will have shifted greatly...

the person in the bulky blue tattered rain breaker with tripod could be me...

Guy:

I have just done this same trip again at the end of December.  The suggestions above are good ones. The Central Coast is wonderful. I highly recommend this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Photographers-Guide-...5186&sr=8-2

I have several books and this one has given me the most helpful info.

Couple of my favorites and links to pics on my blog:

One of my favorite parks is Montana De Oro.  A sunset post from MDO.

I tried a new technique for wave pictures from the pier in Avila Beach (between Pismo and SLO).

There is a huge pier and WR Hearst State Beach, which I'm sure has all kinds of photographic possibilities.

But actually, my strongest recommendation is to visit Nepenthe Restaurant.  Someone mentioned this place to me shortly before my trip, but I had no idea what a special place it is.  When we got there, we were hungry and I wasn't able to fully appreciate the place. But I bought the book and enjoyed it immensely. I'm really looking forward to going back, to enjoy and photograph the place.

Enjoy the Central Coast (my future home!).  Hopefully you can do a follow up post with your winners.  Bob Towery.

Just got back from my Big Sur trip.  Will be trying to post some photos in the next few days.

Thanks so much to everyone for the tips!
