5d mk2 vs sony a850 (colours)
« on: December 17, 2009, 04:52:12 pm »

I'm shopping for a camera; and while I prefer the 5d mk2 (mostly due to lens selection; including ze); one concern I have is that in most sample images I see from the 5d there is a blue tint. I can't figure out  if this is due to camera setting/wb or a native behavior of the camera.

The pictures from the sony (a850/a900) look warmer and perhaps (hard to tell since this depends on the lens) have a greater tonal range. For example if you look at the iso example at luminous-landscape and look at the arm of the dummy the sony is noticably warmer. Like wise if you look at imaging-resource images and compare a850 to 5d the face (skin tone) of the person has a blue (yucky?) undertone.

Is this native to the canon; the lenses used on the canon or just the settings chosen (perhaps default jpeg setttings?)

Adjust your settings, make a color profile with the Colorchecker Passport. It never has been so easy to adjust the profiles.

Bit confused; are you saying that the profile used to process the sony image is different than the profile used for the canon; and if the profiles had been the same the images would have been more similar ?

You can make your own DNG profiles with the Colorchecker Passport.

Color rendering with digital cameras is completely fungible; with the right tools and software you can make it whatever you want it to be. The differences between manufacturers is simply differences in the internal camera profiles used for JPEG rendering. With profiling software like Passport you can make any camera's color look like any other camera's color, or make your own tweaked color rendering, and apply that to any camera. The notion of buying a camera for its color rendering is antiquated. Shoot RAW, make your own profiles, and you can have whatever color you like.

What I have been reading is that the a900 render skin tones better due to stronger cfa; which causes more noise at higher iso. Don't know if it is true; but that is what I've folks seem to be saying. Browsing the web it seems to me that a lot of pictures with the 5d mk2 are a bit off on skin tones. Not sure if the two are releated.

And if you count how many of these people made their own color profiles, I would bet a significant amount of cash that the number is zero, and that most of them have no idea what a camera profile does, or how to make or use one.

Here are more videos about the Colorchecker Passport: http://bit.ly/7mmca4

You can tweak the colors to your needs. Viewing images on the web is - in my opinion - not reliable. You should view prints that are done with a color calibrated workflow.
