I am not sure of which ballhead to buy because of its special design for the mid column.  Any suggestion?

Hello,

1. How much money you want to spend?
2. What is the heavisest lens/camera combination you will use it for
3. Have a look at Really Right Stuff, Kirk, Markin

Hmmm. I own, and have owned, many Gitzo tripods. I've never had one that couldn't accept a regular head though. What' special about this one that it can't take a Markins head (which I'd highly recommend over RRS, etc.)?

I have this tripod and like it very much.  There is no head-dependency - not sure I am following your question.  The only thing you have to be careful about is that when you are horizontal that the head doesn't come unscrewed at it's base.

I use the Markins Emile, even for my D3x.

My preference is the Linhof Profi II  new ones for about $200 on Ebay! as good as a RRS BH55 slightly less bulky
