Nikon 10-24 or Tokina 11-16
« on: December 11, 2009, 04:02:34 pm »

I am interested in an ultra wide zoom for my D300 and was wondering if anyone has used both the Nikkor 10-24 and the Tokina 11-16 lenses and could provide some information so I can make a relatively informed decision about my purchase. Other than the difference in speed (and money!), how do both lenses compare. I shoot mostly landscape/travel photography and currently have an 18-200 Nikkor as my only DX lenses. My other lenses are a fully manual 24mm f2,  55mm Micro Nikkor f2.8, an AF 18-35 Nikkor and a 70-180mm Micro Nikkor from my film days. I appreciate your feedback and hope everyone has a wonderful holiday.

I have no experience with either of those lenses, but I have been using the Sigma 10-20mm for 2 years now and find it to be an excellent lens. I recommend that you consider this, too.

Hello,

Have a look at the link below

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tokina/11-16mm.htm

I use a Tokina 17mm lens with my Nikon D3X and it is as sharp as a Nikon 14-24mm lens.

Regards

Simon, which Tokina 17mm lens are you referring to? I didn't think Tokina had anything that wide for FX cameras.

i have a Tokina 11-16 primarily used underwater with a 20D.  the 11-16 has somewhat better resolution than the Canon 10-22 (which is one of the better crop-frame wide angles) and is of course faster - although you're not going to use f2.8 unless you really need to.  the 11-16 is a solid smooth operating metal lens and heavier than the plastic Canon

i believe photozone has a test on the Tokina but maybe not in the Nikon mount

the Tokina has a reputation for having the highest IQ of crop-frame wide zooms and i would recommend it unless you need wider zoom range

i tried it on the 5D2 at 16mm for grins and it's not bad at all stopped down a bit

Hmm, the Review you link gives the lens 3 stars out of 5 and calls the resolution "Nothing special but solid.", and this on an 8mp APS-C camera. Doesn't exactly sound like 14-24 AFS performance, to me. B&H doesn't carry it some I'm guessing it's a discontinued lens.

Hi Jeff

I have done some comparison tests with my Tokina 17mm against a Nikon 14-24 and resolution wise at 17mm there was no difference in resolution even up to the edges of the frame. The only difference was the Tokina had more CA which of course can be fixed in photoshop. When you consider the cost of this lens it is a very good performer - unfortunately Tokina don't make it any more but I have seen them for sale on KEH website.

Cheers

I appreciate everyone taking the time to respond to my post. I had forgotten about the Sigma lens which is certainly another option. Now comes the fun part-what to do! Thanks again for your help and happy holidays.

Here's another review on the Tokina

http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/379-toki...8_canon?start=2

Had a Sigma 10-20mm lens, but the image quality at 10mm was shocking.
Sent it back to Sigma in Japan, but still was unusable when it came back so I got my money back from the New Zealand distributors.

I decided to stick with my Tokina 12-24mm lens, but sold it when I got my Nikon D3x. If I had stayed with my Nikon D2x I would now have the Tokina 11-16mm lens

Cheers

I haven't used the Nikkor, but the Tokina is the lens that is mounted on my D300 more than any other.  There is a little amount of distortion on the wide side, but it's a quick fix in PS.  Other than that, it's top-notch in my book.  However, if you ever foresee going to FX, I would seriously consider forking over the extra $1k and getting the 14-24.  Sure, it's a lot more money, but in the end, it would save you money.  The only thing I don't like about that lens is the inability to screw on my Singh-Ray Vari-N-Duo.

Thanks for all the input regarding these lenses-I ordered the Tokina from BH and it will arrive shortly. Now I need to start saving for something on the long end of the spectrum.
