Viewfinder focussing on X1, GF1
« on: September 17, 2009, 04:52:29 pm »

When using the external viewfinders on cameras such as the GF1 or the upcoming X1 can you tell what the camera is focussing on in autofocus mode?

Lets say you're shooting at 1.7/2.8 for the shallow depth of field it is of course really important to make sure you focus on the relevant part of the images...so when using these external viewfinders can you tell?

Perhaps this info is not yet available but thought I'd put the question out there.

Cheers,

Marc

Yes, there is a little square that shows you where the AF is focusing, on the Panasonic at least. Additionally you can get a magnified view in the viewfinder to confirm the focus is on the spot you want. Certainly with the G1 or GH1 even manual focus in the EVF is very easy indeed because the image 'pops' into focus, perhaps because the EVF is slightly coarse in contrast, so I assume the GF1's EVF will allow the same. The X1 will only have an OVF, so no it won't show you where it is focusing, only on the LCD.

Thanks Steve.
That is good to know on the GF1.

I recently used my 5d and a 35 and 85mm prime on a trip and found it a very nice combination...but too big and indescreet over all. So looking for smaller form overall, viewfinder very necessary, etc, etc

So looking to get second scaled down small kit, (an addition to 5d, etc of course!) and not looking to spend the M9 money, the GF1 with two small primes may be a good choice, depending on IQ of course.

Thanks.

This is one reason why I have little interest in *optical* add-on VF's, as with the X1 and E-P1: they are seriously non WYSIWYG. Hopefully, Olympus will soon follow through on its talk about a second m4/3 body with EVF and about the same size as the E-P1.
