hasselblad comparison old cf lenses to hc lenses?
« on: August 15, 2009, 06:36:10 am »

hi,
i know that some of us are using their zeiss lenses on a h-body as well as new hc lenses.

is it worth to buy cf lenses (on ebay there are real occasions to have), or do they perform not as good as hc lenses at all  (noticable in real life shooting - not on mtf charts or theoretical thoughts)?

cheers

When I had my H2 and Leaf back, I tried one of the 40mm CF (latest version before the IF) and compared it to the 35mm HC.  In my opinion, the 40mm was not as sharp but overall reasonably good lens.  I just thought it was too much work to use the adapter with the lens. You loose AF as well. In the end, I did not think it was worth the effort and the cost of the adapter and the lens was about the same as the HC lens.

@Dick: not bad. did you take a picture with another lens that compares to your 50-110 hc?

@mark: if i would buy only one lens it would not be worth it. but i'm thinking of a wide angle lens and a telephoto lens also. maybe 40mm / 50mm and 250mm
the price for the 250mm lens (2nd hand) are at $1000, the 40mm is much more but the 50mm is also in the range of $1000.
s the more lenses i would purchase, the more it would make sense.

my dream would be the new 35-90 hc, but i'll probably not be able to affort that in the next couple of years....

Well there is the 40mm IF but that is 5K or so plus the adapter.

Not of that scene... I used the 40 because it is wider than my 50- zoom.

I took and processed that image before Phocus supported lens correction for the film lenses, (and I think I have not saved the .fff file), so not it could be even better.

I already had 4 Zeiss lenses, so buying the adaptor made sense.

It seems that I could sell my 4 Zeiss lenses and adaptor and get most of the cost of apo-digitar 47XL and 210mm lenses to complete my set.

apo-digitar 47 XL?
do you have a cambo camera, or does that mean that such lenses are available for hasselblad bodies?
that would be interesting to me too...

I'm a little out of my technical knowledge level here, but according to my sources, the HC lenses focus much more precisely to work with digital. With digital, the light must focus precisely on the CCD. Film being thicker, the focus required isn't so exacting. I was talking with a well known photographer who told me that he gave up his beloved square format Hassie system for the H system for this reason. His square Hassie images just weren't sharp enough with digital.

I'm not an expert on this so I'd welcome feedback.

Due to the higher resolution, everything is more critical with digital, but one theory (wishful thinking?) is that with film, the three colours are not in the same plane, and non-apo lenses focus the three colours in three different planes to correspond - the colours would have to be in the right order on the film to achieve this.

Getting near-perfect film-results is about as challenging as with digital. But it's more difficult to judge their quality, even with a good 10x loupe, you don't see the amount of detail as a 100% crop of a digital image on your 30"-screen - or you have a consumer-scanner which is basically a mediocre camera itself - so you only see the digital image taken from the original on your screen... Or film flatness/focus wasn't perfect, while you simply shot 10 images with digital and took the one with the best focus...

Fuji HC-lenses are not optimized for digital in any way, the H-system was introduced when MFDBs were still quite exotic, using entirely different sensors than today with different requirements, either. "Digital optimization" is barely possible anyway, a good lens remains a good lens and resultion/minimizing aberrations... remain the (difficult) goals for optical designers since decades. But there are lenses available that take the cover glass of the sensor into account or try to avoid oblique light rays - but those lenses are not from Fuji/Mamiya.

The V-System wasn't updated for quite a while, most lens-designs are quite old, that's propably the only disadvantage, but all newer designs (40IF, 300/350SA) are superb (and better than what I have seen from the Fuji-lenses) - on film & digital! But it's a 6x6-system with no turnable MFDB available, it was expensive to manufacture the high-quality-mechanics, doesn't have modern electronics and it isn't really updated anymore... So it's not only about the lenses, sadly.
