Noise reduction with the Panasonic GH1
« on: August 13, 2009, 08:33:57 pm »

I don't know if anyone here is interested in raw shooting with the GH1, but if yes, then one should be aware of following.

Apparently the camera offers a selection from five NR options. I downloaded raw files from Imaging Resources with different option; they are named _NR1, _NR3 and _NR5. I analyzed the effect of NR on the raw data and got confused by following effects:

ISO  100: I have not even checked because of the ISO 200 result
ISO  200: effect not apparent (perhaps not underexposed enough?)
ISO  400: NR5 is affecting the raw
ISO  800: NR1 and NR3 are affecting the raw
ISO 1600: NR1 is affecting the raw
ISO 3200: no effect at all

So, either Imaging Resources messed up the file names/NR options, or Panasonic messed up the firmware. Whichever the case, raw shooters need to be aware of the noise reduction, for it destroys some fine details.

It really seems a crazy NR vs ISO criteria. Did you contact Imaging Resources?
