P65+, Problems With Camera Movements?
« on: August 07, 2009, 10:38:03 am »

Is anyone using the P65+ on a technical camera?

I'm in the process of upgrading from a P45+ to a P65+ but I'm hearing some conflicting reports. A few usually well-informed individuals have suggested the P65+ suffers more than the P45+ from camera movements, particularly with wide angle lenses, and the resulting problems are much more difficult to resolve in C1 than with the P45+.

On the other hand my (amazingly honest) Phase One dealer reports no adverse comments...so far.

But it's all conjecture and hearsay, I've not spoken to anyone who has actually used a P65+ on a technical camera and has first hand experience of this back with wide angles and movements. Any product/architectural photographers out there able to comment based on their real life applications?

I'm using the back for architecture work with a tech camera and have to say that I can't see real differences between the P45 and P65. (In terms of color cast) I have the feeling that, the P65 has a stronger color cast but more uniform. What I mean by that it goes more into one color. With the P45 I had more LCC files with a range of colors. I'm using it with a 40, 90 and 150mm lens so I can't comment on something really wide as the 23, but I can't imagine that there should be any problems. If you have any more specific questions feel free to just write me a PM.

Thanks Christopher, that's reassuring. I don't go much wider than 40mm so hopefully I'll get the same result. Apart from that what's your experience been of the P65+ so far?

Hi Gary,

Here are a couple of quick sample pictures taken with a P65+ on an Alpa SWA with the Rodenstock 23mm lens.  On shot is with the camera in zero position and one with 5mm of front rise.  I would think that the 23mm would be the worst case scenario with respect to these issues.  However, it might be possible that different lens/back combinations may perform a little differently.

The only adjustment made to each picture was a gray balance to macbeth chart.  No LCC is used on either file.

I hope this is helpful.

Best regards,
Paul

To see how well the lenses hold sharpness at the edges with large movements it would be really great if someone could do a shot similar to the one I've posted here:

The P45+ and the P65+ side by side would be a dream :-)

Capture Integration have certainly got P45+ and P65+ files up on their site, not necessarily with the lens you want, but full size files, for download and comparison.

you can't see the sharpness fall off at large movements in these examples. Actually there is no file of the P65+ with large movements online I know of. I'd like to see a 35mm or 47mm (or any lens with large IC) at full shift (20mm or so) so that one can see if the smaller pixels of the P65+ are limiting movements or not. Can we go 10mm rise in vertcial composition with the 47XL (or 35XL)? Or 7mm? ...

Here is a comparison with 47 digi XL both zero position and full 25mm rise on Alpa SWA with P65+.  Again only adjustment is gray balance and no LCC.

Hopefully these files will be somewhat helpful  shrunk down to this size. If I get a chance this weekend I will try to do a more interesting comparison and find a way to serve the full res files.

Paul

Thanks a lot, Paul!
Yes, the 100% crops would be fine to judge details. Too, maybe you can use rise in vertical composition or lateral shift in horizontal composition (so the movement with the long side of the frame).
Anyhow - thanks again!

I'm working on a larger review which probaby will cover some aspects. I can't say when I will finish it, cause I'm quite busy traveling at the moment.

Here is a link to our test page showing several tests of the P65+ with several different lenses and camera systems:

Chris, see post #7

I think our tech, Doug Peterson, may have some examples from a recent workshop he attended. I'll see if he can post them for you.
