Battery Question for Technofiles
« on: July 15, 2009, 07:04:52 pm »

Is there any benefit to using multiple batteries over one batteries given equal power ratings?

Ex: 3 AAA at 700mA vs 1 AA at 2100mA

Thanks

If it were 3 'AA's yes, but with 'AAA's having so much less capacity than 'AA's, you negate much of your gain, and it's not a good deal for the money. Rechargeable would help some....

Each AAA battery is 1.2 volts (rechargeable, otherwise 1.5) and if they are connected in series as they usually are in electronics that will add up to 3.6v vs just 1.2v of your lonely AA battery, even if their amp ratings are the same. This little equation might make the picture clearer:

amps x volts = watts

And also bear in mind that if you have multiple batteries in a bank, all will be downgraded to the state of the weakest one. It is better to have fewer batteries of higher capacity in a bank.

That's it then. The 3 AAA's are in a LED light and the LED require 3Vs to fire.

And also watts/amps = volts -- lol

Thanks.
