Nikon 500mm f4 P
« on: June 11, 2009, 09:24:42 am »

I just bought this lens and am a bit concerned about the feel of the focus.  It is not at all creamy smooth like all the smaller lenses.  It is more free and occasionally rough.

There is a little knob that does something regarding front and back focus rings.  I might have gotten something a little out of whack when I loosened it.

???

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The little knob on the 500 f/4 P is to preset the focus so that you can focus at one point then quickly go to the indent for a second focal point. Newer af lenses have electronic presets that do the same with the touch of a button.

This is useful for both sports and in wildlife shooting and allow you to cover two places with this lens.

To disable, simply set the ring to say beyond infinity and tighten the knob. Your focus should be smoother.
