Canon updates 5D Mark II with added video features

Canon is introducing a firmware update for its EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR that will enable photographers to manually control exposure while shooting video

The update, which has been requested since the release of Canon’s first camera to sport a video mode, is expected to popularise the feature with professional photographers and videographers.

‘Following the launch of the EOS 5D Mark II in September 2008, Canon’s research and development team has listened closely to customer feedback to develop additions to the camera’s movie recording functionality,’ says Canon in a statement.

‘The camera has been met with incredible enthusiasm by major motion picture studios, independent filmmakers and professional videographers,’ adds Canon. ‘The consensus was that the EOS 5D Mark II is a phenomenal tool but needed to include manual exposure control within video to be fully realised.

Users will be able to control the aperture, ISO and shutter speed when shooting video. Prior to the update, the camera automatically adjusted exposure with the change of overall brightness in the frame, leading to unwanted effects in movies.

Now, Canon says, manual control should open a multitude of possibilities for photojournalists and news photographers.

The free firmware update will be available on 02 June on Canon Europe’s support website.

If only they would listen to the long time complaint about the hassles of mirror lock up which affects ALL their camera models! Surely a button or switch wouldn't be that difficult to put on future models - perhaps starting when the 1D MkIIII comes along

they already have buttons and switches such as the useless print button which now turns on 5DII Liveview (one huge step forward) and the my menu is close enough to almost be acceptable for lockup

my speculation is that a couple major film studios offered serious pressure and a carrot to fix the video controls and that we'll see Canon advertising use of the 5D2 in major productions over the next year
