View finder on Sigma DP 2

I am sorry if this is a dumb question.  What does an external viewfinder on a camera like the Sigma DP2 do?  Why do they cost so much?

Hi,

Photography is firstly about seeing, an external viewfinder makes you see better. It makes you focus on the view with your one eye, to frame it. A viewfinder is bright and clear, letting you see the actual scene even when camera is off. It also makes you press your camera towards your face for stability and makes you focus more on the image.

I have a Voigtlander 28mm for my DP1. The camera would be lame without it. The viewfinder is the top item for my DP1 system. For the 28mm it has been stated that it is better than the Sigma. Voigtlander also makes a 40mm but I do not how it compares to the Sigma, but Voigtlander makes very good external viewfinders.
