Canon iPF5100 Ink Wasted on Cleaning
« on: May 02, 2009, 04:31:54 pm »

There was a recent post at the Canon Wiki about ink used for cleaning in the iPF5100 printer.  There was reason to expect that it might be a lot better than the 2.4-2.9 ml per day found in user tests of the iPF5000 for two reasons:

--the PF-03 printheads in the X100 series printers having a teflon-like coating that might cause fewer clogs/cleanings than the old PF-01 printheads
--Canon's claim that ink used for cleaning was significantly reduced with firmware 1.35 for the X100 printers

Using the same methodology as that used for previous tests on the iPF5000, the poster reported ink used for cleaning at only 0.35 ml per day over a period of approximately one year.  During this time the printer was left on almost continuously (presumably in sleep mode most of the time).

When I calculated the ink used per day for my iPF6100 (mostly turned off due to pressing obligations at work) with firmware before 1.35, I got a figure of 0.81 ml per day, still substantially better than the 2.4 ml per day used by my iPF5000.  Also, it seems that the strong cleanings (I had 6, the other poster had only two) chew up a LOT of ink, so leaving the printer OFF for long periods of time may end up using as much or more ink as leaving it on and in standby mode.  Since my iPF5000 only used 3 watts in standby mode, this MAY be the best way to go.
