split image focus screen for 5D Markll
« on: April 17, 2009, 09:09:59 pm »

Hi.

I remember fondly my old Minolta 7s rangefinder with its split screen focusing.

Even with the excellent Canon autofocus I find myself turning it off regularly and it is sometimes difficult to tell if I have exact focus where wanted when focusing manually. I'm a landscape guy not doing much sports or action shots.

I'm looking for advice re installing a new focus screen. I've identified the following two companies offering 5D MarkII products:

http://haodascreen.com/Canon5D.aspx
http://brightscreenstore.com/store/index.p...;products_id=58

Anyone tried the Haoda or Brightscreen product on a 5D? Problems? Issues?

Thanks ...

I've had a Brightscreen (#p232 Proscreen) on my 5D for about 3 years. No problems with installing it. For manual focus (which is 99.9% of my work), it's 'way less eye-torture than with the 5D stock or Ee screens. Especially excellent when combined with the Canon Anglefinder C.

The 5DII's LCD and 10x magnification, however, blows them away for accuracy and ease of manual focusing. Especially if you're on a tripod, there's no comparison.

Thanks Daws,

I haven't got into the live view much yet. Just had the 5D for a few weeks. I'll try to spend some more time with it although I don't always shoot on a tripod and now enjoy the hi speed settings of the 5D!

Do you think its worth getting the split screen? Will it have any effect on the display of the focus points when I'm in auto mode?

If I was starting with the 5DII instead of the 5D, I wouldn't upgrade the focus screen or purchase an anglefinder -- not after experiencing how well the 5D2's live view, LCD and 10x magnification work. But again, I'm on a tripod essentially all of the time and don't use AF.
