P25 Costs Refurbed and used?
« on: March 01, 2009, 09:54:33 am »

Hey,

I am wondering what the costs of P25's would be either refurbed from a dealer with one year warranty or used from private sellers.

People have been trying to low ball to $5k and some places still sell them for $10k to $12k.

Can any dealer chime in here as to a rough estimate of what your selling your P25's for with standard warranty.

Thanks,

JT

The prices vary depending on which camera they mount, so perhaps you could specify that? Mamiya backs are apparently more expensive than Contax backs, for example.

Friday I was offered a lightly used P30/H for $8,800.00 from a dealer with warranty. And some people her thought that price was a bit high.

JT,

Currently a refurbished P25 with a one year classic warranty lists for $12,990.00, but I would get an estimate from your local dealer.  While purchasing a DB from a private individual can get you a lower price than a dealer, there are some drawbacks.  While all warranties on Phase One digital backs stay with back no matter who the owner is, if there
is an issue that is not covered by the warranty, you will have to deal directly with the person you purchased from.

Sincerely,

I heard that besides the P25 and P20 all non-plus refurbs are sold out? I was really eyeing on the P45 refurb.

Hard to tell since it's so volatile at the moment.

I received a quote for the P30+ and very tempted.

This is outside the USA, and includes additional taxes.

Roughly $12,200 USD, P30+ refurb.

From what I know you can basically only buy Phase One backs from your own local country, i.e Phase One dealers in the USA won't sell to people outside of the USA, I think.

But it gives you a rough idea on what the market is like, once you adjust the exchange rate.

A used back (sold by a non dealer) seems a lot cheaper though, and could probably ship anywhere it anywhere.

I've been looking at this:

Holy cow

Might be a really silly question! But if I purchased a back off ebay, that say, has warranty that was bought from a Phase One USA dealer. Would I still get covered warranty buying that back?  because you say "While all warranties on Phase One digital backs stay with back no matter who the owner is", even if the new owner is from outside the USA?

Just pushing my luck!

Easton, You shouldn't get a back with less resolution than the P45.  For what you shoot you need the file size and most likely your competitors use high resolution equipment.  I've got a couple of shots coming up where I being asked to be able to produce images 9000 pixels across.  If the P65 (Mamiya) is available by than to rent I'll give it a try (I know it's just under 9000), otherwise I'll have to get out the Flexadaptor which is not really part of my workflow anymore.  Actually, I'm going to try to convince the client that 7200 pixels will go to 9000 and look great (it always has before) but if they don't agree will any of the Phase sales guys let me know the status of the P65?  Thanks, Jim

Than it looks like this is gonna really hurt my wallet!

Interpolation won't do for them?

I've never done above-the-line work before, so I don't have any experience with what clients demand at that level. But with PR of course the biggest size print is a double page spread, but above-the-line is where I wanna go!

Also - what about stitching? I do a lot of montages in my work but I can't imagine stitching being too far fetched an idea... even for rig shots.

Actually I guess stitching won't work for rigs since a relatively wide angle lens is normally used? I've never gone any closer than 45mm on the Mamiya before, and that was with the big 8 meter rig!

But for studio and other statics, yeah maybe stitching would work?

Easton, Workflow is critical!  The additional time taken to shoot two captures and then stitch will slow you down way too much.  Don't forget AD's want more for less these days and that includes angle variations, lighting variations, etc.  If it's an interior add in all the nav screen variations, which might be in the middle of the two captures, what a mess it could be.  That's why I'm thinking of renting a P65 for an upcoming project that they want the capture to be 9000 pixels across.  The rental price is very high so I'm weighing the advantages and disadvantages since my client expects me to have the necessary equipment (in other words, it's at my expense).  I've done a ton of gatefold images with the P45 without a problem so I'm hoping to convince my client it's not necessary.  Anyways, the P45 is a great piece of equipment, hopefully you'll be able to swing it.  Jim
