Lens microcalibration on Sony a900?? (and others)
« on: February 09, 2009, 09:04:31 am »

According to digitalpixels.net there is a "lens microcalibration" feature on the a900 (as well as some Canons and Nikons) that once set, is locked into the camera's memory and then the focusing plane is accurately set whenever a lens is mounted. I have no idea what this is and can't find any referenece for it in the manual, or in any menu. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

In Sony speak, it's called AF micro-adjustment. And it definitely is described in the owner's manual.

Just to add, in case you weren't clear on this, micro-AF adjustment is for adjusting the camera with a specific lens mounted. The issue is that the positioning of the mount is never going to be exact for every body and lens, it's always within a certain tolerance. Using the micor-AF adjustment allows you to set the focus for that body and lens combination (the camera should detect which lens is mounted and recall the settings for that lens, I think some go just by model while other cameras will read the serial number as well) and, in theory, you should get much more accurate focusing.
