« on: January 27, 2009, 10:34:54 am »

just finished a little frankenstein job:

Canon 5d mk2 mounted on a Linhof 679 with a modified Mirex adapter.

currently the shortest lens i can use is 135, my 90 wont focus further than 60cm, but i probably hav a solution for that...

I was in contact with them, but they wouldn't do it with the linhof 679.
it is not ideal, as the sensor is far behind where it should be. therefore 135 as the shortest lens. back movements are possible, but the crop has to be readjusted, this can be done with the mirex to a certain extend. currently the mirex is screwed onto a standard lensplate, but i will try it on a recessed one, that should move the canon closer to the linhof. i will lose the tilt ability of the mirex though.

using canon's live view fantastic, compare that to any MFDB!

With all these new backs I loose track.. which back now has the best untethered live view feature... i.e. the fastest "refresh frame rate".
I know this has been discusssed to death in the past, but is it the CCD nature of the MFDB sensors and the consequent heat generation by way of "always on" which makes live view so hard to implement, or is it a power issue - surely li-ion cells have come on in the last few years ?

Dear Ed,

there is no MF digital back having the live view on the display (untethered). The CCD technology allows only for tethered live view and on a computer screen.

Best regards,
Thierry

i would suggest to use  "sad view"  as a more realistic description of the performance for what is called  live view on mf backs. i more and more believe the only reason for the hype
about  CCD was that they could not get their hands on CMOS chips and technology.  after years of brainwash and marketing there is not much left beside resolution what ccd chips do better.

Absolutely not true, scp!

Any company could and can get hold of CMOS technology as well as sensors. And FYI, Leaf used to market one of their previous back with a CMOS inside.
We have much better to do than "hyping up" and "brainwashing" our customers.

Best regards,
Thierry

so it is for purpose that we have

- poor high iso performance

- a live view which looks  like a joke compared to canon  and we can not even dream about live view on camera

- have to buy a lot of batteries to get through a day of shooting because of the high power consumption

i've made a similar adaptation using a lensboard and a chinese Hassy/Eos adapter... for my Arca 69.
I have the same limitation considering focal lenght...

Using the mirex is a good idea !

Purpose is to reach the best possible file and image quality, always. This being said, I would suggest you to double-check such claims by yourself:

- ISO performance: I have posted samples of ISO 800 regarding the eMotion 75 back, months back, and I don't think it can be compared as to "poor performance". Have a search and check by yourself.

- Live view on the display of the back is simply not possible with the CCD technology. However, tethered live view works well and is not described as a "joke" by customers using it.

- Battery performance: it seems that you do not have the right information here as well. eMotion backs, with their special power management, can take up to 2000 images or 3 to 4 hours shooting with a full battery charge.

Best regards,
Thierry

The beauty of using the Mirex is that I can shift the camera back to realign the crop when i am using back-movements. without that shift i have to readjust the crop due to the sensor being so much further back that where the film plane of the linhof is meant to be.

Did anyone ever try to rip a 5D apart to get closer to the sensor?

first let me say that i don't trust any test i have not done myself, it is so simple to manipulate  exif information in a file as you sure know.. but if your file was really shot at iso 800 it is of course phenomenal because every system i have tested so far did not deliver a comparable quality.  daylight is usually not a great challenge for any system but in 100% of cases where i need high iso i have to deal with tungsten, vapor lamps and worse such conditions would be more revealing.

live view ? it alway depends  from which point you look at it   - so  never play with a cheap 5d2  it would ruin you illusion.

I honestly don't know how to manipulate EXIF data, but I guess I could easily figure it out, if I wished to do so.
You can trust me, "scp", I have shot it myself. And though it was not under tungsten light conditions, it was in the very early morning during sunrise at the horizon, almost dark with the first light rays hitting from a very flat angle.

best regards,
Thierry
