WHICH FLASH TO BUY
« on: January 25, 2009, 01:20:45 am »

I have a 5D MK II camera. I am ambivalent about buying the canon 580 EX II, are there other flash units out there of equivalent power, functions but cheaper. In particular, I have read of the metz series. Insights/ comments from those who have actually used the two will be particularly helpful.
Thanks

Mo Kenny

WHICH FLASH TO BUY
« Reply #1 on: January 25, 2009, 07:55:19 am »

I've given up on 3rd party flashes for my on-camera units. I have a Canon 40D and 1DsMkIII. Previous bodies were a 10D, 20D, 1D MkII, and 1Ds MkII.

I own the Canon 550 EX, 580 EX and I just purchased the new 580 EX MkII. The integration as a system is excellent. I just shot a portrait session for my financial planning firm staff members using the 580 EXII attached to a Westcott 60" umbrella, the 580- EX with a 45" Westcott umbrella and the 550 EX on a stand to light the background. I use the Canon ST-E2 mounted on the hotshoe to trigger the combination. I can control the lighting ratio between the Slave A and Slave B strobes using the buttons on the ST-E2 without fiddling with the strobes themselves. It works great.

Given the investment that you already have in your Canon equipment, the marginal savings by skimping on a flash system is not a good idea IMHO. You will have the strobe for many years to come, so the initial savings will fade over time and not worth giving up the great features and photographic results that you can achieve.

Cheers.

Depends on your requirements. What exactly do you need to shoot with flash? Fill flash for outdoor photos? News photography? Multiple-flash lighting setups? Wildlife? Your cat? :-)

The Canon 430 EX flash is much less expensive, and works pretty well under most circumstances. The only serious downside, I think, is the lack of a port for an external high voltage battery pack. Yes, it's slightly less powerful than the 580, but I don't think that's something you'll notice except in extreme conditions.

I agree with Bud in that I've gone back to an  all-Canon setup for small flashes. I use the wireless controller to fire the flashes (a 550, a 580, and 2 of the new 580 IIs), but I have all the flashes set to manual power output. I'm Old School enough that I expect the flash to put out the same amount of light every time I hit the shutter button, and I don't want no stinkin' camera thinking for me <big grin>.

You can probably pick up the Version I of the 430 or the 580 for less money at Adorama or KEH is good used condition. I actually prefer the original 580 over the new one -- it's smaller, lighter, and the Master-Slave switch is an actual physical switch, making it much easier and faster to use.

Hope this helps.

The 580EX as well as another other flash in Canon's line up should work very well with the 5D MkII.

It certainly will. Are you able to get a better price for the Mark I? I see people selling it for even more than Mark II sells for.

I have the original 580EX and on my 5D2 it doesn't show up on the in camera flash function settings. I get a message saying "This menu cannot be displayed. Incompatible flash or flash's power is turned off." Do I need a 580Mk2 flash for this function to work or is there a problem with my old 580? I know it was a little flaky with my old 5d sometimes.

Only the new flash units - 580EX II and 430EX II - have camera menu integration.

Your 580EX should work just fine. It just can't be controlled the lazy way - you actually have to reach the two inches all the way up to the flash unit to change things.

Guess I'll just have an extra bowl of Wheaties before I head out shooting. Anyway it's good to know my flash is operating correctly. Thanks.
